Unified Patriots by Vassarbushmills
Ever hear the rally cry, “Remember the Maine!” How about “yellow journalism”? Well, they were fathered by the same men, Joseph Pulitzer and William Randolph Hearst, of “Citizen Kane” fame. Both were newspaper publishers, and also Democrat congressmen. Hearst even ran for president.
Their newspaper chains had been pushing for war against the Spanish Empire in the western hemisphere since the people of Cuba had risen up against Spain in 1895, citing the Monroe Doctrine as sufficient legal justification to drive the Spanish out. Hence was born “yellow journalism”. (I just thought you should know its pedigree.)
In January 1898, the battleship USS Maine, laying at anchor in Havana Harbor, blew up. A mine they rushed to say. And the jingo-cry “Remember the Maine” headlined Hearst and Pulitzer newspapers coast-to-cost and America was suddenly at war. And we quickly drove the Spanish out of the hemisphere.
And we also relieved the Spanish of their Asian possessions as well, for which the people of the Philippines are largely grateful, in part because the United States kept its word about when, how, and in what condition, we would hand the islands back over to civilian control, in just over 40 years. (A world record by imperialist standards.) Wobbly at times, the Republic of Philippines is still a functioning democracy after 70 years.
Now, the logical leap here, considering the obvious similarities between the run-up to the war in Cuba and the yellow journalism of the modern media in trying to stir public sentiment about a looming war with North Korea, would be to conclude that this is the subject of my discussion here.
It isn’t, in part because the entire North Korea war-drum beat today is a canard, only today the American media knows it while the jingo-media of 1898 didn’t, for it was another 80 years before it was determined that the Maine likely blew from accumulated coal gas in the power plants. If viewed in the cold light of day, war with North Korea isn’t looming at all, and those who aren’t glued to jingo headlines know it.
But after that war, we turned Cuba over to its own devices, while we occupied the Philippines. Now we didn’t exactly do a bang up job in the Philippines, but Cuba fared much worse going it alone, as has virtually every other Latin American democracy, almost all of which were products of either Spanish or Portuguese administrations for over 250 years.
In 2003, I sat down in the Staked Plains of the Texas Panhandle with an old Russia hand who also had had a great deal of experience in the Middle East. (I met him in the Moscow McDonalds in 1991, before the Fall.) In a long, rambling exposition he laid out his theory as to why American-style democracy could succeed in the Middle East and why no other democracy model could.
Paul Bremer was in charge in Iraq at the time, and the Iraqis were about to have their first election. And Bush and Bremer were doing it wrong, Moses Sands said.
(I abridged that long piece and republished it at RedState in 2010, and then in book form along with some other essays on the Middle East at the start of Arab Spring in 2011, at Amazon.com.)
The premise of his argument, which I’ve held to religiously ever since, is that since America was created from the bottom-up, only an American model of government can cause the people of another country to turn against their old ways, from tribalism to top-down local government models, by building new institutions from the bottom-up. Existing institutions at the tribal and local level, which Bremer tried to build on, generally work against the individual citizen from pursuing his own life and liberty with his House as the foundation.
As an occupying conqueror in Iraq we had a duty to try to change that.
Iraq never had a chance[…]

The mainstream media has covered a number of stories throughout the year, while ignoring others. Find out the top under reported stories of 2015.
My prediction for 2016 is sadly enough more of the same.

Independent Sentinel by S. Noble
Barack Obama railed against the GOP again this morning and directed his hatred towards them before an audience of foreigners in the Philippines. When he insults the GOP, he’s also insulting half of the American people. He’s also ridiculing non-GOP Americans who want this massive influx of Syrian refugees stopped until we have a handle on it.
He said it as more terrorists are caught posing as migrants.
Obama claimed the GOP is “afraid” of “widows” and “orphans” and he again had the audacity to tell us “who we are”. How would he know? He was raised by communists, mentored by a revolutionary communist and spent his formative years in Indonesia. He hasn’t a clue. I have linked a clip below if you haven’t seen his rant.
Since it’s very easy to get a forged passport, they should stop the influx from that part of the world period – temporarily.
I guess Barack didn’t read the papers this morning where we were told a second woman terrorist blew herself up in Paris during the raid and the ringleader of the attacks is a “migrant.”
Jim Kallstrom, a former Assistant Director to the FBI, told Elizabeth Hasselbach on Fox&Friends this morning that Josh Earnest’s defense of the influx of unvetted Syrian “refugees” is “unbelievable”…”absurd”…”nonsensical.” There are no records to check in Syria” and you can buy a forged “passport for $150 bucks”, he said.
Adding more than once that the “arrogance” is “just over the top”, Kallstrom appeared to be stunned[…]

The Glittering Eye by Dave Schuler
I didn’t want to let this go by without comment. At National Interest Ted Galen Carpenter muses over whether China’s economic slowdown might encourage its leaders to foment a war:
‘China’s leaders likely feel increasingly uncomfortable. The implicit bargain that has been in place since the onset of market-oriented reforms in the late 1970s has been that if the public does not challenge the Communist Party’s dominant political position, the Party will deliver an ever-rising standard of living for the people. The bloody Tiananmen Square crackdown in 1989 was a graphic reminder of what happens if the Party’s position is challenged. However, until now, the economic portion of the bargain seemed secure, characterized by breathtaking, often double digit, rates of growth. It is uncertain what happens if the Party can no longer maintain its part of the implicit bargain, but it is likely that a dangerous degree of public discontent will surface….
Just for grim fun let’s list some of the places where a major war might break out. It could be deliberate…

When the Obama administration mentioned an off-shoot of Al Qaeda, labeled the Khorasan Group, my first, second and subsequent responses were the Khora-who?
Even more suspicious was the urgency of Obama and his minions this past week to hold numerous press conferences on the subject of the so-called Al Qaeda offshoot.
Well cat out of the bag, America, chalk it up to “rapid, iterative experimentation.”
[Keywords: “iterative experimentation” and “Test, Learn, Adapt” “iterative” meaning repetition.] That, however, is another post. (See my July 13, 2013 post entitled, “White House creates NUDGE SQUAD to shape behavior of Americans.”)
If you repeat a lie often enough, the people will begin to believe it; but before you drink the kool-aid; be advised that the Khorasan Group is a lie, an Obama deception, the purpose of which is to save face; Barack Obama’s to be exact. Even more nefarious, it is justification for war airstrikes in Syria that will lead to the takedown of Bashar Assad.
You may recall that during the 2012 presidential campaign and beyond Obama’s rallying cry was “Al Qaeda is on the run” and “Al Qaeda has been decimated.” Again, not true.
Just last week, Europe European counter-terrorism specialists reported that the United States never once mentioned the Khorasan Group nor were they informed of the plan to take the group down. Why? Because no such entity exists.
As reported by Barack Obama, himself, the sites hit last week belonged to the Khorasan Group.
The installations hit last week that the snake oil salesman and pathological liar claimed belonged to the Khorasan Group actually belonged to the Al Nusrah Front “an al-Qaida affiliate that anti-government rebel groups consider an important ally in their fight to topple the government of Syrian President Bashar Assad.”
National Review By Andrew C. McCarthy
It’s a fictitious name the Obama administration invented to deceive us.
You haven’t heard of the Khorosan Group because there isn’t one. It is a name the administration came up with, calculating that Khorosan — the –Iranian–Afghan border region — had sufficient connection to jihadist lore that no one would call the president on it.
The ‘Khorosan Group’ is al-Qaeda. It is simply a faction within the global terror network’s Syrian franchise, ‘Jabhat al-Nusra.’ Its leader, Mushin al-Fadhli (believed to have been killed in this week’s U.S.-led air strikes), was an intimate of Ayman al-Zawahiri, the emir of al-Qaeda who dispatched him to the jihad in Syria….’
And in the event, one thinks that this is a right wing conspiracy, think again.
So how you may ask did Barack Obama pull of his latest deception? The mainstream media as always was onboard.
The Fake Terror Threat Used To Justify Bombing Syria By Glenn Greenwald and Murtaza Hussain, The Intercept.
As the Obama Administration prepared to bomb Syria without congressional or U.N. authorization, it faced two problems. The first was the difficulty of sustaining public support for a new years-long war against ISIS, a group that clearly posed no imminent threat to the “homeland.” A second was the lack of legal justification for launching a new bombing campaign with no viable claim of self-defense or U.N. approval.
The solution to both problems was found in the wholesale concoction of a brand new terror threat that was branded “The Khorasan Group.” After spending weeks depicting ISIS as an unprecedented threat — too radical even for Al Qaeda! — administration officials suddenly began spoon-feeding their favorite media organizations and national security journalists tales of a secret group that was even scarier and more threatening than ISIS, one that posed a direct and immediate threat to the American Homeland. Seemingly out of nowhere, a new terror group was created in media lore….
