Every Monday, the WoW! community and our invited guests weigh in at the Forum, short takes on a major issue of the day, the culture, or daily living. This week’s question:

Russia, Friend Or Enemy?

Rob Miller: I think President Trump is taking exactly the right stance on Russia. They are competitors, neither friend or foe at this time. We will need Putin’s help to fight the war of jihad, and Putin is finally coming around that he can’t control Iran like he used to… he doesn’t want the Israelis taking matters into their own hands in Syria, which could lead to Russian casualties and a major war. Yes, he put out the de riguer language about how Iran’s nuclear power is ‘controlled’ but he knows what a lie it is and so does Trump. Both of them made a point of including Netanyahu in the loop and reaffirming their commitment to Israel’s security, and unlike a former U.S. president, Putin is serious about this and so is Donald Trump.

Russia, as Putin has stated before needs the U.S. as a superpower, but he’s essentially a Russian nationalist. As he said, he doesn’t trust Trump and Trump doesn’t trust him but both look out for the interests of their respective nations, and they are now, as Putin said  ‘looking for points of contact and mutual interests.

The entire nonsense about Russia meddling in our elections is hypocrisy in the extreme. Putin was diplomatic enough not to mention it, but President trump’s predecessor openly meddled serious in democratic elections in Israel, the UK and Nigeria among others. Democrats, who said nothing about it at that time have their nerve raging about Russia meddling in an election. We even put a regime in power in the Ukraine that was openly anti-Russian. I wonder how we would react if Russia or China put a regime in Mexico that was blatantly anti-USA?

It’s a pity Trump felt compelled to apologize and back track on what was really courageous diplomacy. Instead of taking the easy way out, cancelling the summit over Mueller’s bull, he went ahead knowing that no mater what happened he’d be crucified by the Left and their media. If he had been aggressive towards Putin, they would have wailed about a war monger president he doesn’t understand diplomacy. Since he decided to really exercise true diplomacy and be honest about how both countries are responsible for th ebad relations between Russia and the U.S. he’s being crucified as a traitor and ‘Putin’s puppet.

It’s obvious who the real traitors are, at this point.

Don Surber:Any discussion of Russia should begin by drawing the distinction between this country and the Soviet Union, which was a far larger country that included Georgia and Ukraine. To its credit, the USSR was one of the few socialist states that had toilet paper.

Russia is larger than the United States with less than half the people. Texas has a larger economy than Russia with one-fifth the population.

While Russia has a lot of nukes, I cannot see much use for nukes in any kind of war. You blow one off, and the world will crush you.

Still, those nukes carry sway politically.

But the biggest asset Russia has is its natural gas and oil which Germany needs because it foolishly banned fracking.

Thus the USA cannot look at Russia as a friend or ally, but rather as a big old bear that is missing most of its teeth, but it has this very valuable pot of honey that our biggest frenemy in Europe wants. Putin has masterfully played the USA media into making him this larger-than-life Rasputin (McCain was no help when he said when I look into his eyes, I see KGB). Putin is an animal trainer in a third-rate circus with this bear on a unicycle. Interesting but not very practical.

Be wary, but friendly. His help with North Korea and Syria are appreciated.

Dave Schuler: Is Russia a friend or an enemy of the U. S.? Both. Neither. It is a different country from the U. S. and as such has foreign policy objectives different from ours. As has been mentioned by others today’s Russia is not the Soviet Union. The Soviet Union was apocalyptic and milliennialist. Russia is irredentist. Ukraine, Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia have been parts of Russia or the Soviet Union since 1793 and Georgia has been since the first decade of the 19th century. All of these areas now have populations of ethnic Russians due to explicit programs of Russification in the 19th and 20th centuries. I don’t point these historical facts out to justify them but merely because of the role they play in present day Russian foreign policy objectives.

Those objectives may be summarized as

1. Present Russian territorial integrity.
2. Access to warm water ports, e.g. Sevastopol, Tartus.
3. Defense of Russians in Russia’s “near abroad”, i.e. Baltics, Ukraine, and the small population of Russians in George
4. Defense of Slavs.
5. Defense of Orthodoxy
Again, I’m not seeking to justify these objectives, merely identifying them. IMO following the collapse of the Soviet Union the U. S. squandered an opportunity for establishing a more cordial relationship between Russia the United States through a series of actions including
• Interfering with Russian elections and domestic politics
• Defeating Saddam Hussein, a major Soviet ally and customer, in the Gulf War
• Bombing Serbia without UN Security Council authorization
• Reneging on its promise not to enlarge NATO by admitting former Warsaw Pact countries
• Invading Iraq and removing its government without UN sanction
• Admitting the former Soviet Republics in the Baltic to NATO
• Assisting in the overthrow of the Libyan government in violation of UN Security Council mandate
• Threatening to admit Ukraine and Georgia to NATO
• Supporting Al Qaeda in its attempt at overthrowing the Syrian government
• Supporting the overthrow of the legitimately elected (and pro-Russian) government of Ukraine by an anti-Russian and purportedly neo-Nazi group
and there are others including generally dismissing, demeaning, and belittling Russia over the period of the last 25 years. That is a tragedy and contrary to U. S. interests. There is no more important bilateral relationship in the world than that of the U. S. and Russia. Our two countries are the only two either of which has the capability of destroying the world. A less hostile relationship can only be good.

Finally, China and Iran are not natural allies for Russia. Quite the opposite they’re natural adversaries. By comparison Russia’s interests and U. S. interests rarely interfere with one another. We should be able to cooperate with one another where they intersect.

One final word. It would be interesting to discuss this question (friend or foe?) in the context of other countries, particularly China, India, and Germany.

Bookworm Room: Is it too coy to call Russia a frenemy? The reality is that modern Russia is the tail end of a once great empire. Its current population is shrinking and its economy is a disaster, but it still has those nuclear weapons, a worldwide influence network, and at its helm an incredibly cold, cruel, effective leader. Putin’s leadership abilities (they may not be used for good, but they are still leadership abilities), coupled with eight years of Obama’s feckless “leading from behind,” has given Russia a lot more leverage than it should have. That’s the reality Trump has to deal with.

Meanwhile, there’s China: 1.5 billion people, the world’s largest standing army, a sense of manifest destiny that would have been comfortably in place at the height of the 19th century expansionist colonial era, and a willingness to cheat in the world marketplace, steal technology and other protected ideas, manipulate currencies, and do anything else to maintain an economic edge. That doesn’t make China a current enemy, as in on-the-ground hot warfare, but it makes it a very dangerous potential enemy.

When it comes to both Russia and China, it’s much better for the U.S. to have a working relationship with them than to have open enmity. Moreover, when it comes to balancing power, there’s a lot to be said for a Russia / U.S. alliance — a loose one — to offset China’s manpower edge.

The reality is that politics invariably puts us in bed with people and nations that are not nice. The Lefties weren’t upset when Roosevelt partnered with Stalin to defeat the Nazis. Of course, the Lefties adored Stalin even as he was mass murdering his own people but still…. Even now, 70+ years later, when the Lefties can no longer deny Stalin’s depredations, they’re still comfortable with Roosevelt partnering with a mass murdering former Hitler pal because it was necessary to do so. The enemy of my enemy is my temporary ally and all that.

As is the case with North Korea, I see nothing wrong with Trump offering to work with two dictators, provided that no harm comes to us. That these leaders — Kim Jong Un, Putin, and all the other nasties out there — are dictators is certainly a problem for their citizens, but that doesn’t mean in geopolitics that it has to be a non-starter for us.

The only thing Trump needs to do is make sure that these evolving relationships are mutually beneficial. The last thing we want is to see the Obama years repeated, with Obama giving up everything he had to dictators around the world while getting nothing in return for America. As long as there’s a quid pro quo that benefits America, both in terms of the economy and national security, world affairs demand that sometimes you make nice with bad people. Only Lefty governments believe that you make nice with bad people to America’s detriment.

Rather than waffle on here, I’ll just say that Trump represents the necessary end of the Wilson doctrine that insisted that it was America’s responsibility to shed her citizens’ blood on battlefields around the world, in order to export democracy to ungrateful, profoundly undemocratic nations.

Laura Rambeau Lee: To say our relationship with Russia is complicated would be an understatement. America and Russia are absolute ideological opposites with radically different objectives. That being said, both countries have apocalyptic capabilities and the possibility of mutually assured destruction requires we maintain a continuing dialogue. President Trump sees Putin and Russia as a competitor and understands we must find ways to work together when it is mutually beneficial. He has a lot of work to do to reestablish our position of strength in the eyes of the world and particularly with Russia, which became painfully weak during the previous eight years of the Obama Administration and Secretary of State Clinton’s bumbling attempts at diplomacy. I suspect after Helsinki, Putin knows without a doubt President Trump will not sell out American interests and that he will do what is necessary to maintain our position of strength on the world stage.

Well, there it is!

(There are lies, and damned lies….” -Mark Twain)

Unified Patriots by Vassarbushmills

I’m absolutely delirious in my dislike for the Associated Press.

And it’s all about honesty and dishonesty.

Now, personally I’ve never known Mr Manafort to lie, but I suppose he has uttered an untruth here and there, especially in his term as (unpaid) campaign manager for Donald Trump (March-August) in 2016. Why we know this is because all of Trump’s campaign staff lied during those months.

How do we know this?

Just ask the Associated Press. Or CNN. Or the New York Times, etc, etc.

I know you’re thinking, in this day and age, there are many sides to the truth. But in fact there is usually only one in any given set of circumstances. Courts of law and the Rules of Evidence, while allowing many versions of the truth to be sworn to, provide rules that a jury can only find one to be the superior truth, and that all must abide by that finding.

In many parts of the world, for centuries, this rule of law has defined civilization. In America, as well as other free societies, the media has always been (sort of) exempt from this rule, while still subject to certain natural laws and punishments that just natural follow when they step too far out of line with the truth in trying to mold public opinion.

Next to corrupt politicians, card sharks and drummers of whiskey cut with kerosene, I think local editors were the most likely liars to find themselves tied to the front end of a cow-catcher, or being tarred and feathered with hot oil. Like the ancient biblical tradition of throwing prophets who turned out to be wrong over a cliff, I think being honey-dipped, at least the cuffs of one’s fine $500 Armani, is a tradition worth recapturing[…]

Every week on Monday, the WoW! staff, community and our invited guests weigh in at the Watcher’s Forum, short takes on a major issue of the day, the culture, or daily living. This week’s question:Is Demonizing Putin And Russia A Smart Move?

Don Surber: “Is Demonizing Putin And Russia A Smart Move?”

No, but it is one Democrats are stuck with. In order to legally spy on The Donald’s campaign, they had to convince a FISA judge that Putin was in cahoots with Trump.

As Trump exposes the espionage, I believe most Americans will have a what-the-feathers moment and side with President Trump. We do not like wiretapping.

Rob Miller : Ahh, Russia! A mystery wrapped in an enigma wrapped in a wonderful sandwich of that Russian black rye, turkey or roast beef, spicy Russian mustard and pickle with kasha on the side and a Stoly chaser (Sorry, Sir Winston).

First, let’s not forget that Barack Hussein Obama and his $ecretary of $tate Hillary Clinton gave Putin whatever he wanted in the beginning. They literally betrayed Poland and the Czech Republic by reneging on America’s commitment to put missile defense units in those countries and all Putin had to do was glower a bit.

Russia’s nukes at the time of the Hillary ‘reset’ were outmoded and out of date, So Obama and Hillary put together that ridiculous START treaty, which not only had the U.S. decommissioning state of the art American nukes on parity with Russia’s obsolete ones, but giving Russia access to our top anti-missile technology like Shoot To Kill, with no quid pro quo from Russia at all. And that doesn’t count Hillary giving Russia control over a chunk of America’s uranium production in exchange for a nice donation to the Clinton Foundation and a $500K speaking fee for Bill. What the Clintons and Obama gave Russia hurt America worse and was worth far more to Putin than they and their surrogate’s wildest accusations about anyone in the Trump Administration!

But as to the question at hand…

The major challenge of our age is the War on Jihad. Nothing else comes close. This isn’t a clash between civilizations as Samuel Huntington put it, but a clash between civilization and totalitarian barbarity. And the Russians know that first hand.

In the 13th century, the Mongol invasion of the early Russian state of Rus was a catastrophe. Rus lost most of its territory to the Mongols and to the Polish/Lithuanian kingdom. The Mongols devastated whole, entire cities and left them in ruins.Whatever was left of Russia had to pay tribute in slaves and treasure to the Tatars, the Muslim successors to the Mongols. And that lasted until the 15th century, when the Russians finally drove them out. The Russians have been fighting jihad for centuries, and have recent, first hand experience of jihadi brutality…like the 2004 takeover of a school in Beslan by jihadis and the subsequent rape, murder and torture of the children , teachers and other adults they held hostage. Even the most savage beasts would never have behaved in such a fashion. Beslan, Mumbai, Nairobi, Paris, Nice, Ma’alot, Orlando…it never changes except for the details.

If civilization is to triumph over barbarism, we must remain united, whatever our differences. That is how the West won at Lepanto and at Vienna. Different kingdoms put aside their differences to fight the greater threat. And we will need security cooperation with Russia to win the War on Jihad.

The uncomfortable truth of the matter is that Putin and Russia have been the ones fighting jihad, while Barack Obama and his cabal have been complicit in financing, empowering, arming and training it. It was Obama, after all, who destabilized the Middle East, destroyed America’s relationship with Egypt by trying to turn the country over to the Muslim Brotherhood, distanced us from the region’s Sunnis by empowering Iran, and helped create ISIS and backed ‘moderate Syrian rebels’ who were al-Qaeda affiliates.

The entire Crimea dust up is the most ridiculous of all. What we did to Russia and the Serbs with Kossovo is far worse than what Putin did with the Crimea. And what’s more, we didn’t even have any national interests at stake there. It was simply wag the dog, to distract the news headlines from Bill Clinton’s intern problems and look good to the Muslim world, particularly the Saudis. And it has negatively affected our relationship with Russia severely to this day. Memories are long in that part of the world.

Russia needs the Crimea as its sole outlet to the Mediterranean, and the warm water ports it can reach via the Black Sea. That’s also one of the main reasons behind Putin’s involvement with Syria…Russia’s vital naval bases, the Syrian ports at Tartus and Latakia .

Putin might not be a leader Americans would appreciate, but Russia is a different place, where the country has only prospered under strong, autocratic leaders. Putin is a Russian nationalist, but he also keeps his agreements. A sit down between Putin and Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, who Putin knows and respects as a man of his word is likely to yield some important and necessary fruit.

Mike McDaniel : onald Reagan’s 11th Commandment was “thou shalt not speak ill of other Republicans. Immediately after he left office, the Republican Party abandoned that common sense idea, which was equally immediately seized upon by the Democrats, who have rigorously observed it, and practiced the opposite: “though shalt speak ill of every Republican.”

Speaking ill of the Russians is, mostly, a no-lose proposition for the Democrats. Sure, it’s insanely hypocritical for the party of Ted Kennedy, who actually sought the aid of the Soviets, an evil empire bent on the destruction of America, to help him sabotage Ronald Reagan. The same party’s presidential candidate, John Kerry, betrayed his fellow military members, and his picture hung, for decades, in the North Vietnamese war museum as a hero of the struggle against America. The dishonor role goes on and one, yet it is the same party now indignant that members of the Trump Administration may have had the slightest contact with the Russian Ambassador, a man whose job it is to have as much contact with Americans as possible.

President Trump, with his too friendly comments about Vladimir Putin only painted a bigger target on his back. On one hand, we certainly want relations with Russia to be as good as possible, consistent with America’s national interests and those of our allies, but it wouldn’t hurt Mr. Trump, even now, to take a bit of a rhetorically harder line with Russia.

Still, the Democrats are riding any mention of Russia like a rented mule, and their goal is to use that ridiculous, lame topic to do as much damage to Mr. Trump–and to the nation–as possible. They don’t care how much America is harmed in the world in the process, as long as they get Trump, and perhaps, even seize power again.

Putin is doubtless laughing uproariously. He could care less if the Democrats say bad things about him. He knows, no matter what, they will always be useful idiots, easily manipulated to the detriment of America. He could easily be working with Democrats to harm Trump, who any rational leader must understand is not going to be the feckless pajama boy and useful idiot Barack Obama was. Any weakening of America is to Putin’s advantage, and our Democrat Party is working for him, whether intentionally or not.

Until Trump, and the Republicans can agree to fight back and not give an inch, the Democrats, and Putin win. Merely acknowledging their false accusations and faux outrage surrenders without resistance. The media will, of course, do everything it can to attack Trump and help the Democrats. Unless they want to surrender the majority, and give the Congress and White House back to the likes of Barack Obama, Trump and the Republicans had better put on a unified front, and say: “yes, members of the Trump Administration have talked to the Russians, and they’ll talk to the Russians in the future, just as they will talk to representatives of every other nations. That’s what we’re supposed to do. You’ll see the result in our foreign policy. That’s all we will have to say on this issue, now get the hell out of my office.”

The Democrats do have a risk: Americans are sick of fake outrage and fake news. However, the Administration and Republicans need to show them they’re on their side. Thus far, Republicans seem determined to squander everything that fell into their laps. The real battle is an offensive one against Democrats who are subverting our republic, not a defensive battle against non-scandals.

Demonizing Russia may be a smart move, if Republicans continue to do more damage to Mr. Trump than the Democrats. It won’t take long to find out.

Bookworm Room: My glib answer is that, if the Democrats are doing it, is is ab initio a bad idea. Russia is exactly the same as it was when Obama promised Putin flexibility and then handed the Middle East over to it; when Hillary, in exchange for sizable bribes, was nice enough to give Russia control over vast quantities of uranium; or when Podesta did whatever it was he did to increase his wealth thanks to dealings with Putin’s Russia. The problem is that, by playing this public game of demonizing Russia when nothing has changed, the Progressives are trying to force both Putin and Trump into an adversarial relationship that may not be to America’s benefit.

In this regard, it’s important to keep in mind that the Progressives have been unable to articulate an ideological rationale for this demonizing. This distinguishes the situation from that prevailing during the Cold War, which saw America stand worldwide for freedom and the Soviet Union stand worldwide for tyranny. It’s true that Putin is a KGB oligarch and tyrant, as well as Russian who wants what Russia has always wanted: Control over vast tracts of land and people. Having said that, though, this is not the Cold War and we are not in an ideological stand-off with Putin or Russia. Progressives have simply chosen him as the Bogey Man because they can.

My take is that allowing Trump, who truly loves and “gets” America, to have a free hand in his dealings with Russia is probably the best situation. In that way, Trump can respond as needed to whatever situations arise, whether in the Middle East, in Europe, or domestically. Creating an artificial enmity, where none has existed for the preceding eight years, gains nothing and risks much.

So, back to my first point: As is true for all Democrat/Progressive ideas, demonizing Putin and Russia is a dumb move.

Laura Rambeau Lee : The Cold War never ended no matter how hard the left tries to convince us otherwise. Progressives love to demonize Russia and blame them for every bad thing. A lot of it is true, such as them trying to influence our political elections. They have been doing this for a very long time and are expert at disseminating propaganda and disinformation.

The dirty secret is the progressive left (many within the media and in high political office) is working towards the same goal as Putin – the destruction of the United States of America. We need to be very clear that Putin is a hard core communist and has illusions of restoring the old Soviet Union.

But demonizing Putin and Russia is not a smart move. We have been dancing this dance with Russia for decades; utilizing them as allies when it serves our shared interests and placing sanctions on them when they step out of line. Maybe with Gorbachev President Reagan could “trust, but verify.” With Putin there can be no trust, and always verify. But as a world power we will continue to need to keep diplomatic lines of communication open with Russia. Demonizing them will only make our tenuous relationship more difficult to maintain.

Well, there it is.

Russia Sends World’s Largest Submarine, with 200 Nukes, To…

And so it begins. As reported by Debka File, Vladimir Putin has sent the Dmitri Donskoy (TK-208), Nato-coded Typhoon and world’s largest submarine into the Mediterranean, destination Syria.

Dmitri Donskoy TK-208 worlds largest submarine despatched by Putin to Syria October 2015

Aboard the sub are 20 Bulava (NATO-code SS-N-30) intercontinental ballistic missiles with an estimated up to 200 nuclear warheads. Each missile, with a reported range of 10,000km, carries 6-10 MIRV nuclear warheads.

The Russian sub set sail from its northern base on Sept. 4, escorted by two anti-sub warfare ships. Their arrival at destination in 10 days time will top up the new Russian military deployment in Syria.

President Vladimir Putin’s introduction of a nuclear force opposite Syrian shores builds up what first looked like an operation to fortify Assad’s regime in Damascus into a military expedition capable of an air and sea confrontation with US forces in the Middle East.

US Secretary of State John Kerry suggested as much Saturday, Sept. 5, when he expressed concern over reports of Russia’s “increasing military build-up in Syria” in a phone call to Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. The State Department reported: “The Secretary made clear that if such reports were accurate, these actions could further escalate the conflict, lead to greater loss of innocent life, increase refugee flows and risk confrontation with the anti-ISIL coalition operation in Syria.”

Kerry was referring to potential Russian interference with US-led coalition air strikes against the Islamic State in Syria….
