Those veterans, called Baby Boomers, all recognize these Hollywood stars who served in the military during World War II. It’s called a handshake.

Obviously this is not the America of today that it was seventy years ago when “movie stars” just naturally put love of country above their own personal interests.

Sterling Hayden, US Marines and OSS.  Smuggled guns into Yugoslavia and parachuted into Croatia.

James Stewart, US Army Air Corps. Bomber pilot who rose to the rank of General.

Ernest Borgnine, US Navy. Gunners Mate 1c, destroyer USS Lamberton.

Ed McMahon, US Marines. Fighter Pilot. (Flew OE-1 Bird Dogs over Korea as well.)

Walter Matthau, US Army Air Corps., B-24 Radioman/Gunner and cryptographer.

Steve Forrest, US Army. Wounded, Battle of the Bulge.

Jonathan Winters, USMC. Battleship USS Wisconsin and Carrier USS Bon Homme Richard. Anti-aircraft gunner, Battle of Okinawa[…]

A Necessarily – Amiss Christmas Missive

Christmas, food for thought, Homeless, Poverty, remember the less fortunate, Veterans

It is unfortunate that those with an agenda has made Christmas all about commercialism, profits, material desires while ignoring those in need and/or leaving those in need to the care of the government.

News alert:  The government doesn’t give a damn and any talk of suffering by poverty stricken and homeless Americans have become talking points pulled out every 2, 4 or 6 years to rack up votes.

Here in New York City, those very same bureaucrats have declared war against individuals and entities that, from their heart and on their own reach out to the homeless and poverty-stricken, the result of which leaves the unfortunate even worse off.

Please don’t ignore them this Christmas season.  Remember our veterans, many of whom are homeless and living beneath the poverty level.  Keep in mind that  a new television, Playstation 4, computer, toys or skis is not at all what Christmas is about.

One solitary act of kindness and/or a moment of caring does not cost a dime.

The Hermit Chronicles

Editor’s note: This was first published back on Christmas Eve of 2009. The world was a dramatically different place back then. Accordingly, it has been nuanced over the years since its first publication. The message it intends to convey, however, is timeless.

No matter where you go or what you do, at this time of year, you cannot avoid the marketing and advertising “blitzkrieg” that has transformed the Christmas season into some horribly disfigured mutation of the original point of the holiday. Thanks in large part to the political correctness movement, and this idea that public displays of religion and faith… most especially Christian religion and faith… are now considered offensive to the smaller numbers of non-believers, and should be constrained wherever and whenever possible.

All the while, as this unwinnable cultural Civil War rages on, there are vast numbers of innocent bystanders out there around the world silently suffering through a sadness or anguish or heartbreak or loss that those cultural Civil warriors could scarcely comprehend let alone personally endure or overcome.

Each of us – from every faith and lack thereof – would be well-served by the reminder that, for some, the Christmas holiday season is not necessarily a happy or joyous time of year. It should inspire you to take pause, long enough to see beyond the gadgets and baubles and trinkets and consider the lives and circumstances of our less fortunate brothers and sisters around the world. It should encourage you, as well, to be just a little more humble, a little more generous, and a whole lot more kind… not just to your friends, families, and loved ones, but to the nameless & unfamiliar faces of “your tired, your poor, your huddled masses” that you encounter as you walk freely about the cabins of your everyday lives[…]

The twelve Apostles receiving inspiration from the Holy Spirit and composing the Creed Illumination by Somme_le_Roy_f.10v – Date: 1295 (Wikipedia)

Unified Patriots by Vassar Bushmills

William F Buckley, Jr. was the founding figure of modern conservatism in America. He wrote God and Man at Yale when he was 25, and wrote many books afterward until he died in 2008.

But he had an extra dimension which seems to have been lost on the newer generations of conservatives, which I’ll discuss here.

In 1960, at age 35, in his home, WFB and several other “founders”, penned the Sharon Statement, which became the founding statement of the Young Americans for Freedom, (the YAF) which went on to become the central conservative campus organization for over 50 years.

I never joined, as I was not a conservative in my college days.

It was not until 1964, and the Goldwater campaign, that I became aware of Mr Buckley, who was then still not yet 40, 4 years younger than my dad, who subscribed to National Review that year and sent back- issues to me every few weeks or so.

By the time Ronald Reagan was elected, and I was 35, I had been a conservative for only four years, but never disagreed with National Review in all those earlier years about conservatism, just still holding onto my own brand of “Civil Rights liberalism”.

Like many liberals of my generation, my error was in believing government could do good things, which, later reading and real-life experience proved to me was wrong-headed and that the Founders knew exactly what they were doing when they designed government small, and left the people in charge.

In 1976 I had my Road to Damascus moment while in the Army, during the Ford-Carter campaign. I read a Mary McGrory column in the Arizona Republic where she stated (and I paraphrase) that “Modern Liberalism stands for the proposition that all human conduct should be subject to the political process.”

At that instant I ceased being a liberal, and never looked back.

The Sharon Statement, which I link here, while aimed at defining the YAF, is essentially the Canons of Conservatism. Virtually every conservative, including #NeverTrumpers, would agree with it, if they’d bother to read it.

So I recommend every millennial and Gen X’er to do just that.

But in 1960 it was written for college students who already possessed a core set of principles that inclined them to see threats to democracy, internal and external, and the freedom found in free markets and the uniqueness of America in the first place[…]

Veterans Tales by Vassar Bushmills

VeteransTales.org (http://www.veteranstales.org/ )and The Veterans USA 15:13 Foundation (under construction, http://www.theveteransusa15-13foundation.org/) are dedicated to preserving the stories and histories of Veterans on the other, and providing a teaching and education platform for Veterans on the other

I’ve just published the first of several lectures that we’d like to offer to Veterans to be able to use in their home towns directed to 16-18 year kids who, for the past 30 years, have seen America’s exceptional place in history de-emphasized to the point that it has turned downright negative, where in many parts of the country public school children have been taught that we are the principal source of misery in the country.

We at the Foundation believe Veterans are in a unique position to reverse this in enough high school students’ minds to begin an undercurrent in their communities to offset this imbalance.

Simply put, Veterans have had skin in the game, therefore street cred to be able to talk to students about things they haven’t been taught but should know.

We tell our Tales in the body of the VeteransTales.org, and have compiled our Teaching essays in a niche called “VETS IN CLASS” found just below the banner. We will transfer those over to the Foundation site once it’s ready.

This week we published our first Lecture, describing for the Vet a roadmap to teaching young people who are not particularly interested in the subject, and may only be there because their parents sent them. “First Principles” http://www.veteranstales.org/2018/09/23/first-principles-teaching-students-who-arent-interested/

Please read as this will give you some insight as to what we’re hoping to achieve.

We’re a two-man team with no staff, and would like to grow to about five (5) over the next year[…]

SOS on Toast

Veterans’ Tales by Vassar

The other morning one of our local radio personalities was pitching a fancy restaurant in the Richmond area, and he proudly announced that their most popular entre was chipped beef on toast. A ten dollar platter these days, and whudda thunk it? People paying ten dollars for the most plebeian dish in America, the breakfast anchor for five wars at least for every grunt who ever sat in a mess hall, since Pearl Harbor.

All those memories came rushing forward. I tried to remember how many of those meals I even had to pay for and certainly never more than a dollar.

Chipped beef on toast was always a part of my life.  yet I never really gave it much thought.

It all came back to me.

My mother wasn’t the best cook, bless her soul, and my dad muttered little digs about it all the years I lived at home. He carried a small squeeze bottle of ketchup in his coat pocket for emergencies; brussels sprouts, collard greens, broccoli, they almost always got a dollop. Even eggs; scrambled or sunny side up. “Anything to cut the taste.”

We didn’t have breakfast with dad during the week. He was already gone when we got up. But on weekends we got a fine breakfast of eggs and chipped beef on toast, for the one thing my mother was a master of making was sausage gravy. She would toast up four slices of white bread in the oven…then bring over two slices at a time, cradled in her apron, and then brings the skillet over and ladle out that gravy. Why she did it that way I never understood.

She always kept a jar of Armour’s Beef in the cupboard, For 18 years I saw that there but never made the connection.

Every once in awhile, while traveling, dad would spot it on the menu in a small town down US 25, in North Carolina and order a plateful, plus a side of grits.

Then sometime in the 60s, dad took my younger bothers and I to a VFW function at their hall when I was home from college. They had a mess line and were serving up chipped beef on toast. I hadn’t had any for about five years, and since he’d moved up in management in the coal mines, I assume dad’s regular taste for it had diminished as well[…]

Veterans’ Tales by Vassarbushmills

So that backward glance to the 1960s reveals that what we thought was just a blip in our history— Yankee imperialism, force-feeding Christianity on non-Christian cultures (trust me, I heard it all), and the best gag of all, our warmongering being forced on a culture of youth who only wanted to groove and get in touch with whatever visions peyote buds could produce. Yeah, man!

Fifty years later, we’ve seen those innocent children of the sun morph into the most vicious cultural nihilists since Adolf Hitler set loose the storm-trooper hounds on the people of Germany in the decade befote he launched the Second World War.

A few weeks ago I asked the question, what is it that causes a man to join the army, and risk his neck. when he doesn’t have to?

Our Allen Ness, the real sojur of this VeteransTales enterprise, replied that patriotism as I had it described in school in the 60s, had little to do with it; Pledge of Allegiance from 4th grade on, Sunday School about right and wrong, stories of American heroes, Washington, Franklin, Lincoln, in Social Studies, American civics in 9th grade, American History and American Government 11th-12th grade.

What I didn’t know was that Allen, a school kid in the 80s, in all likelihood had very little of the patriotic nature of America ever taught to him in the first place.

Get this: For over 30 years American school children in public schools have never heard the phrase “we hold these truths to be self-evident”! Still, let me tell you what some Soviet law professors did when they heard those lines for the first time in 1991.

They cried[…]
