On Friday, Speaker of the House Paul Ryan in an interview with CNN’s Jake Tapperstated that he is not prepared to support Donald Trump.

House whips in the lower chamber, Reps. Lynn Westmoreland of Georgia and Dennis Ross of Florida in an interview with Politico rebuked Ryan shortly after Ryan announced his decision to withhold support from the 2016 Republican Party presumptive nominee.

…Both lawmakers said they believe their leader is in denial about how Republican voters feel about the real-estate tycoon.

“I honestly don’t understand what Paul’s thinking — I don’t get it,” said Westmoreland, who is retiring after this year. “I try not to give advice to the speaker, but I think it just really brought about, in my opinion, even more confusion to this thing.”

“Trust me, I haven’t been on the Donald Trump bandwagon, but I will support him, and I disagree with Ryan’s comment,” Ross said. “I think it’s time we unite (and) … extend an olive branch and start working this out.”

The sharp rebuke from two senior, longtime GOP leadership allies is a rare sight in the House[…]

The Republican Party establishment is clearly out of touch with the voters.  Can’t wait to see what happens next once the House is back in session.

New York Times Columnist: Wanted a Tea Party Speaker, Mike Lee

Senator Mike Lee (R-Utah) – FreedomWorks Youth Summit 2013.

Acknowledging that the Speaker of the House does not have to be a sitting member of the House, New York Times Conservative columunist, Ross Douthat penned an op-ed Saturday calling for the appointment of Senator, Mike Lee as John Boehner’s predecessor. H/t Patrick Howley, Breitbart.

Douthat is one of the few Conservatives at the NYT. Okay and I am suspicious of the NYT like anyone else reading this post but Douthat makes some good points and in spite of the fact that Mitch McConnell, Harry Reid and John McCain would do anything to get Lee out of the Senate, Lee is a good man and Constitutionalist.

NYT

IN an earlier, cozier Washington, D.C., John Boehner could have been the kind of House speaker whose memory is held dear by high-minded chin strokers on Sunday morning television programs: An icon of sadly bygone bipartisanship, a cutter of the grandest bargains, a man who, by God, made legislation move.

In this Washington, D.C., alas for him, Boehner was a humble bomb defuser, and the only grand bargains he cut were between his more intransigent backbenchers and the demands of political and constitutional reality. And now D.C. looks at his record, his resignation and his possible successors and asks: Can anyone do better?

Probably not anyone with Boehner’s precise profile. Probably not Kevin McCarthy, another genial dealcutter distrusted on the right, who would have recapitulated Boehner’s struggles had his candidacy not been doomed by gaffes and whiffs of scandal….

Douthat goes on to mention Paul Ryan –

The suspicions that the right always had about Boehner, and would have had about McCarthy — that they care more about the deal than about the outcome, more about the party’s donors than any defined small-government principle — does not attach to Ryan in the same way…

BUT

Ryan is not really of the Tea Party. In the Bush era he voted for bills like No Child Left Behind, Medicare Part D, and TARP, all of which today’s conservative insurgents despise….

Then there’s immigration, a fail for Ryan.  See Breitbart’s “Paul Ryan Cooks Up Elaborate Ruse To Save Immigration Components Of Obamatrade”

Enter the senator from Utah, Senator Mike Lee…

A more ideal speaker would share Ryan’s conservative credentials and wonkish spirit, but he wouldn’t have that baggage. The ideal speaker, in fact, would probably have led Tea Party-driven brinksmanship at some point in the Obama-era past, the better to channel it more productively in the future….

Lee has an insurgent’s résumé: He was elected with the Tea Party wave in 2010, defeating an incumbent Republican, Bob Bennett, along the way. He was Ted Cruz’s partner in crime during the government shutdown debates. His scorecard with Heritage Action, often the scourge of G.O.P. leaders, currently stands at 100 percent. And unlike almost every member of the House and Senate leadership, he’s a genuine foe of comprehensive immigration reform.

At the same time, like Ryan (and unlike Cruz), Lee been a real policy entrepreneur. He authored a pro-family tax plan that breaks with some (if perhaps not enough) of the G.O.P. donor class’s orthodoxies. He has offered serious proposals on transportation, higher education and religious liberty. And just this week he was part of a bipartisan breakthrough on criminal justice reform, one of the rare issues where the late Obama years still offer hope for compromise….

There you have it. Wish I would have thought of Lee first. #DraftMikeLee

Breaking: Kevin McCarthy announced moments ago his decision to drop out of the race for Speaker of the House. Exact words: “I just think it’s best we have a new face.”

Washington Times

House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy called off his bid to be the next House speaker Thursday, and the GOP canceled its internal party as it hit the panic button, stumbling toward an end-of-month deadline without a leader in sight.

Mr. McCarthy had been the clear front-runner and likely had support of a majority of House Republicans, but could not win over enough members to claim the 218 votes he’d need to win the position in an Oct. 29 vote on the full House floor…..

Let’s be honest, the only people shocked was the mainstream media and the establishment of both parties.

Immediately after the announcement, Fox News (and they’re not alone) jumped on the blame game wagon. Bret Baier wasted no time pointing the finger at Senator Ted Cruz.

H/t Jim Hoft, Gateway Pundit for catching Fox News blame game.

McCarthy sent the following tweet a few moments ago.

We’re public servants. I have always put this Conference and Country ahead of myself. We need to unite behind one leader and get to work.

— Kevin McCarthy (@GOPLeader) October 8, 2015

Great, Kevin McCarthy drops out of SPEAKER race. We need a really smart and really tough person to take over this very important job! — Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) October 8, 2015

And then there’s a tweet from Hillary Clinton’s camp.

Sorry about the mean tweets you’ve been getting, @KevinMcCarthy—been there! https://t.co/HAwL2D56xu

— Hillary Clinton (@HillaryClinton) October 7, 2015

While not a McCarthy fan, I could not let the sarcasm go so I responded as follows attaching image below (assuming my tweet is sitting in Twitter’s cue somewhere).

“@HillaryClinton @KevinMcCarthy made his bed and so did you.”

Marsha Blackburn Supporting Kevin McCarthy: Hell Frozen Over (UPDATED)

UPDATE: 10-5-15: The vote has been set much later to Oct. 29th, so maybe more conservative candidates will step up.

Marcha BlackburnMaggie’s Notebook by Maggie

Congresswoman Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) supporting Kevin McCarthy for Speaker of the House turns my world upside-down. What’s up with that? I don’t think I’ll ever, again, think of Marsha Blackburn as a true Conservative. We talk about polls all the time. Let’s talk about Conservative rankings. Both can be wrong. We never know how a polling question is asked, and some rankings rank on specific issues, and not on others, but America, this is worth looking at. Why will any Conservative in the House vote for Kevin McCarthy for any reason other to keep a committee assignment? Blackburn is the Vice Chairman of the House Energy and Commerce Committee […]

Cry Baby John Boehner Slams Republicans as ‘False Prophets’

The soon to be former leader of the Republican Party establishment in Washington, D.C. took his whining to a Sunday morning talk show, CBS-“Face the Nation” where he pointed the finger at fellow Republicans labeling them “false prophets” while accusing peers of “over promising what can be done in government.” (approx. 04:10 of video)

Breitbart

Boehner said, ‘You know, the Bible says beware of false prophets, and there are people out there spreading noise about how much can get done. I mean this whole idea that you are going to shutdown government to get rid of ObamaCare in 2013. This plan never had a chance.’

He added, ‘We got groups here in town, members of the House and Senate here in town, who whip people into a frenzy believing they can accomplish things that they know — they know! — are never going to happen….’

I suspect that whining, hating, bitter Boehner will do something during the next 30 or so days that will outrage Republican voters to the point that Boehner would have no alternate but to leave but the first order of the day will be to go golfing with Barack Obama.

Daniel Webster, House Rules Committee, John Boehner, Progressive Republican Establishment, Rep. Richard Nugent, Speaker of the House

John Boehner

Three months after Florida Congressmen Richard Nugent and Daniel Webster joined two dozen other GOP reps in a failed attempt to oust John Boehner as Speaker of the House, Boehner now in his third term as Speaker has exacted his revenge on the two Florida reps by booting them from key positions in the House Rules Committee.

Washington Examiner, by Susan Ferrechio

Reps. Bradley Byrne, R-Ala., and Dan Newhouse, R-Wash., will fill the positions, meaning that Webster and Nugent have been permanently ousted. The two lawmakers served on the Rules Committee in the 113th Congress, but were excluded from the roster approved by lawmakers in the hours after they voted against Boehner….
