So when they say “the FBI, or DOJ or CIA said this, or did that” – your first thought should be, “Which one?” Especially if it’s the media telling you these things.

Also, never forget that is has been this way since at least JFK.

In 1998, a man asked me to help write a book directed at the very people who are now taking back the country, one piece of government at a time. I complained to him that he was asking me to write a book for people “who don’t read.” He said, “Yep.” He died in 2006, and I’ve been trying to write that book, one chapter at a time, ever since.

The Deep State

A little history: For all I know elements of the deep state have been around since Wilson. Those are the career bureaucrats who will move mountains to do things their way, and always protect their jobs, and grow their numbers when the opportunity arises. That’s just part of the human condition, and yes, the Founders understood this. It’s as in a bureaucracy’s DNA to want to do this as it is a deer’s need to rut every autumn.

If governments through the ages have had a fixed star, it would begin with their Bureaucracy.

In the debates over how the new Constitution of 1787 should look, one constant both Federalists and Jeffersonian Republicans seemed to agree was that the size and power of government should depend entirely on the people’s control of the men who both could increase the size and mission of government, and also raise the money to pay for it.

Despite their animosity towards one another, the Federalists and Republicans were of one mind about keeping the federal government very lean. The idea that the federal government should want to grow did not begin until the formation of the Democratic Party and Andrew Jackson, 1824-28, when the spoils system was first introduced…after all the lions had passed away.

But they finally got an income tax in 1913 (16th Amendment), (count the years, by generations, 126 and 4) which, while very, very small, its fine print enabled Congress to increase it almost at will, and then, 19 years later, 1932, with the Great Depression, and the next generation of Progressives called in to fix it, (FDR and the New Deal), the government grew like mushrooms in a rain forest. Many of those programs survived well into the 60’s, until LBJ could replace them with a new set of programs, The Great Society, which haunts us still[…]

Unified Patriots by Vassar Bushmills

Every college kid remembers when he turned 21 because it was the day he could use his own drivers’ license to get into the Boom-Boom Room.

That was in the first semester of my sophomore year, 1966.

There were a lot of laws, even ancient ones, that were in place then that are no longer valid.

I’m sure you’ve heard the axiom, attributed to Churchill, “If you are not a liberal at 20, you have no heart. If you are not Conservative by 40, you have no brain”.

Now Sir Winston was aiming that at English public school boys, their version of Ivy Leaguers, and not at working class people. But American working class people did have a similar version of the same theme. Class distinctions were not the same in America, for children of working class people did go to college.

Of course this was what always distinguished Americans from the rest of the world. Even our noblest thinkers, educators and business successes had a coal miner, welder or dirt farmer in their family tree, unlike the English.

When I went off to college my dad simply warned me I’d act stupid for awhile, “so be careful”. But he wasn’t afraid of me slipping into the Boom Boom Room on a fake ID. When he turned 21 he was on a troop ship headed for North Africa, my pregnant mom back in Cincinnati at her sister’s house to wait out the war. Unlike Churchill’s class, he was more fearful that I’d fall prey to “ideas” that swam deep around college campuses, and become a Democrat, or worse, a liberal. He knew I’d bump into that sort at college, but hoped that I would reject what they taught, so that after college, I’d find a nice girl, get a job, start a family, and vote for the Barry Goldwater of my choice.

That was how it had always been once maturity, duty, and responsibility settled it, the same thing Churchill was talking about.

In 1964 we all looked the same on campus. You couldn’t tell an engineer or pre-med student from an English or poly-sci major[…]

The Well Tempered Claviar

I was married in March, 1968 and was able to leave my small one-room affair for a real apartment. With a TV even. We would live there until I finished law school in 1971. And it was there I discovered “Firing Line” on the local public access station. It was that show that introduced me to Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto #2 .

William F Buckley loved Bach.

It was in that same apartment that I watched WFB take apart Gore Vidal during the GOP and Democratic national conventions. You see, Buckley’s “National Review” was a child of the 1950s and the Cold War. I doubt if any man ever hated Joseph Stalin more than William F Buckley, Jr.

Although Stalin was just as dead as Adolf Hitler, unlike Hitler’s monument to himself, Stalin’s was still alive and kicking, Buckley (and most conservatives of that era) considered Stalinism to be a very real threat, the Vietnam War its latest iteration. A few right-wing baiters drew notice of this deference paid to Stalin (their secret hero) versus Hitler, so tried to paint conservatism as “Nazi”.  So when we are called “Nazi” today, it’s nothing new.

Gore Vidal showcased this tact in this memorable “discussion” with Buckley during the Democratic convention in Chicago. (Fireworks start at 10:02 mark.)

So I was a fan before I ever really seriously read WFB’s magazine. Thank Bach and his well-tempered claviar.

I read NR as often as I could get my hands on it, at the post library in Japan but didn’t subscribe until I came back to Arizona in ’76. Reader-friendly, if you liked an article and wrote to say so, the author would send back a short reply.

Including Buckley[…]

DARWIN AGREES WITH GOD ABOUT MAN’S THIRST FOR LIBERTY

(Note: I’m trying to reformat a book about the Constitution and the Common Man, so I began rereading a lot of scientific literature about evolution, natural selection, territory and instincts, provocative things I’d read in the 70s, then laid aside as they had no immediate impact on me, since I was still in my 20s and predictably stupid back then.

(I now plan to “prove” that the thirst for Liberty is innate in Man and can be proved scientifically as well as through Morality, Reason and Logic, themes we dwell on all the time. I decided to make this the book’s hook, that Man’s desire and right to be free is agreed upon by both God and (some) Darwinists. And  since God is much older, He still gets top billing.

(This article is only a synopsis of the lynchpin theme in my book, introducing this thesis, the chapter itself rather long. I think you’ll find this entertaining, and just a little intellectually challenging, especially for those of you who thought all evolutionists moved in lock step with all those creepy anti-religion, anti-liberty scientists who seem to do the Left’s bidding these days. They don’t.)

In the 13th Century there was an interesting Franciscan friar named Ramon Llull (pronounced “yoohl”), who, like another philosopher 400 years later, was also a noted mathematician. So Llull understood both the immutable laws of logic and God’s laws.  He was also something of a charismatic, which even in the days of the Crusades was rare, and rarer still, any day, for a mathematician.

Llull was born on Majorca, an island off the coast of Spain, so wanted to convert his people under the dominion of the Muslims in Spain. Now in those days the Arabs of Spain and North Africa were hardly the grimy camel drivers we see killing people in Syria, Iraq and Libya.  This period was probably the height of Muslim arts, architecture and scholarship. Their philosophers matched the best in the West and Byzantium; great minds such as Averroes, Avicenna, and Ibn Khaldun. (I studied these men in college, so know how to spell their names.) Llull knew he could not simply march up to people like that and begin pointing to Christian scripture (called “Bible-thumping” today) knowing that these people had their own holy books. Instead, he engaged in a process called “disputation”, which for those of you who’ve followed Plato, Socrates and Aristotle, was a form of argument, involving step-by-step logic, thrust and parry, and which carried the argument to a certain conclusion. If you’ve followed the arguments of Richard Dawkins, the anti-Christian animal behaviorist and William Lane Craig, the defender of Creationism, or the more entertaining Dinesh D’Souza-Christopher Hitchens debates on the subject of atheism versus religion (you can find these on YouTube, and are well worth the 45-minutes of your time), you’ll get some idea how the “disputation” style of argument works. No matter which side you’re on, it’s very edifying for it leads up to a point, if the cards are played well, where one side simply cannot answer one final logical question. Thus is was with Richard Dawkins, who has refused to debate Craig any longer, since Craig posed just that sort of question.

Sadly, this happened to Llull as well, in Tunisia, where he’d forgotten all about the home field advantage, and the Muslims stoned him to death[…]

Veterans’ Tales by Vassar Bushmills

In the mid 90s, before I began traveling to the Soviet Bloc regularly, and finding out what their outhouses looked like, I taught a few semesters at a small business college in Cincinnati.

They students were all black, mostly young women, and from the looks of the nursery across the hall, mostly all young mothers.

This was during the period when Newt Gingrich took over the House, and among other things, forced Bill Clinton to sign into law the ending of AFDC (Aid to Families With Dependent Children) after previously vetoing it, then, proved successful he claimed as his own signature achievement.

These girls were there to get Associate Degrees (A.D.) in various business courses, so they could then get jobs and get off welfare. (I ended up writing letters for several.) My job was to teach them subjects that were required to graduate but which were absolutely meaningless to them in the new marketplace they were about to enter, courses like American Government, which most had taken only a few years earlier in high school and probably slept through then, too.

The course was presented in 3-hour increments, so I knew I was going to get a lot of attitude from some of those girls, while others would snooze on the back row. I needed grab them quickly by making the course relevant to their lives.

So, instead of teaching the textbook version of American Government, “read Chapters 3-4 and 5” etc., I decided to teach the course entirely in terms of how American Government was relevant to them…and those little kids over in the nursery across the hall. I had to deliver three hours of sermons every day, but luckily on subjects I was very good at discussing.

The Hook:

My first lecture always began something like this:

I would go to the chalkboard as the students were settling in, and begin drawing a picture of an Egyptian pyramid on the far left hand side, tagging that at 3000 BC, then draw out a long timeline to the right, ending with the date of the Constitution, but leaving several inches from the edge of the board for a few more notes[…]

Defeating the Left is not the Same as Saving America

(Just a friendly reminder. This is an enduring theme at VeteransTales.org, one of the pillars of why we opened that site. Veterans play a key role in saving America because they all have wagered so much more skin in the game than other Americans. Veterans as a group, for as far back as the Korean War, were never made aware of just how important they are to America’s survival off the battle field. It’s all about that skin in the game; the delayed life’s-plans, the sweat, the scars that heal and those that can’t, for some, the last full measure, not to mention those who serve by waiting at home.

(Please visit from time to time, feel free to comment and even submit a post.)

Defeating the Left is political, saving America isn’t.

The way the Soviet Empire collapsed is all the proof we need…that the Left can never win in the end, because it is destined, as a creature of its own design, to implode in on top of itself. As a law of Nature, the Globalists, the Fascists, the Marxists, call them what you like since they are a little bit of each, cannot design a system that can sustain itself for more than three generations. (Moving into their 70th year, I think the Chinese Communists even know this.)

The “best” days the Soviets ever had, as masters, were when they were brutalizing their people so much the people had to just try to stay alive every waking moment, and could find no extra time to resist their oppressors. In Stalin’s day hating the Soviets was reserved for the intellectuals rotting away in the gulag. As long as finding a scrap of bread was Job One, people had no time to hate and conspire. That has been a cornerstone of tyranny since the pharaohs.

It was when the Soviet production system was finally brought on-line, and that thick layer of apparatchiks was inserted between the people and the bosses was put into place, and things began to get built; factories, dams, collectives, did the Soviet system begin its slow death spiral. It took 75 years to spin out of control, from Revolution to collapse, but it only took 20 for the die to be cast, when everyone learned their place, 10-20-70, and that it would never change.

At its best the Soviet system could never produce at better then 30% efficiency of their Plan, one 5-Year Plan after another, even after they’d stolen all sorts of technologies from the West. Stalin called it “wrecking” and wrecking it was, only he had to invent straw-men to blame, since he possessed the same blindness to the perfectness of his plans as the modern Left is today. He never understood they were fighting Nature itself[…]
