Truth in American Education By Shane Vander Hart

The Louisiana Standards are currently being reviewed and will be revised so now educrats want to drop the term Common Core because it’s “toxic.”

The Advocate reports:

Brigitte Nieland, who follows public school issues for the Louisiana Association of Business and Industry and backs the changes, noted that the state Board of Elementary and Secondary Education calls the guidelines Louisiana standards.

“I just think most people want to get away from the phrase ‘Common Core,’ ” Nieland said. “We are all aware of how toxic that term is….”

Maggie’s Notebook by Maggie

Secretary of Education Arne Duncan is resigning. One of the early questions about Duncan was why he and Obama weren’t shy about defending Obama’s “Safe Schools Czar,” Kevin Jennings. It was so ugly, the Washington Times apologized for having to talk about it. Duncan took the position in 2009, as did Jennings, who left in 2011.

The Obama administration is stonewalling serious inquiries about sexual filth propagated by a senior presidential appointee who is responsible for promoting and implementing federal education policy. Democrats clearly are terrified of ruffling the feathers of their activist homosexual supporters, who are an influential part of the Democratic party’s base. This scandal, however, is not merely about homosexual behavior; it is about promoting sex between children and adults – and it’s time for President Obama to make clear that abetting such illegal perversion has no place in his administration.

It is curious why White House officials and Education Secretary Arne Duncan believe it’s worth it politically to continue taking arrows for defending Kevin Jennings, who is Mr. Obama’s controversial “safe schools czar.” The evidence suggesting he is unfit to serve as a senior presidential appointee is startling and plentiful […]

12 Civil Rights Groups Oppose Opting Out. It Could Have Been 28.

deutsch 29

On May 5, 2015, twelve civil rights groups led by the Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights issued a statement “opposing anti-testing efforts.” In short, these groups are confronting the growing strength of the Opt Out/Resist the Test movement. These groups are the Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, the American Association of University Women (AAUW), Association of University Centers on Disabilities (AUCD), Council of Parent Attorneys and Advocates, Inc. (COPAA), Disability Rights Education and Defense Fund (DREDF), League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC), NAACP, National Council of La Raza (NCLR), National Disability Rights Network (NDRN), National Urban League (NUL), Southeast Asia Resource Action Center […]

Interesting that 16 of the 28 groups who petitioned Congress last January to retain annual testing opted out four months later. Must have had something to do with parents and the writing on the wall. The heat is on.

Compare and Contrast The Easter Message vs The Education Reform Message

Quote from Jean Vanier Found of larche

This is what happens when you treat children as human beings instead of human capital. You listen and attend to their needs instead of complying with the educational elites.

Missouri Education Watchdog, By Gretchen Logue

The Wall Street Journal had an article yesterday about L’Arche, a global community of people with mental disabilities and their nondisabled peers who live together as equals. From The Gift of Living With the Not Gifted:

All the grunting, screams and chatter meld to form an uncommon orchestra as more residents gather to eat. Then we hold hands and sing: “Bless the Lord, you, God’s servants, / All of you who live in God’s house, / Lift up your hands to the Holy Lord / Proclaim God’s greatness and the power of God’s name. Amen.”

Eating at a L’Arche house can be discomfiting if you’re a stickler for table manners. There is much spitting, spilling and gurgling. But gradually the discomfort melts away, and the residents draw you into their world, unhindered by politeness or social rank. That’s the point of the place: to understand what it means to be human in all its imperfect forms, and to mark human dignity where it is least physically obvious.

What an Easter affirmation to read and ponder on this day! What a contrast to the messages we hear every day in education reform. The proponents’ claim for the need of Common Core is for the quest for ‘equity of outcome’, all while the reformers ignore […]

Bill Donohue: Common Core Proponents Strong-Arming Catholic Schools

Authored By Justin Petrisek, Catholic Education Daily

MANASSAS, Va. – Catholic League president Bill Donohue wrote in an article today, “[W]e do object to the tactics being used by paid advocates [of Common Core] to whip Catholics into line.” Donohue was commenting on the recent attempts by a Gates Foundation-funded organization to counter the declining support for the Common Core by “strong-arm[ing]” Catholic educators and opposing The Cardinal Newman Society, as was reported.

Sara Pruzin, a state operations associate for the Council for a Strong America (CSA) and former communications intern for U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, recently contacted a Newman Society leader to rally Catholic support for the Common Core. She sent an email on August 28 to Dr. Daniel Guernsey, director of the Newman Society’s K-12 Education Programs, in which she claimed the Society was part of “strident attacks coming from parts of the Catholic community.”

The Society’s “Catholic Is Our Core” initiative explores the controversy surrounding the Common Core and helps Catholic families, educators and Church leaders to better understand the standards and protect the extraordinary legacy of Catholic schooling.

In his article, Donohue took exception to CSA’s targeting of Catholic educators and organizations:

The Council for a Strong America (CSA) is pressuring Catholic educators to adopt Common Core. That wouldn’t be so bad if it weren’t doing so at the behest of its benefactor, the Gates Foundation, or if it weren’t bashing the Cardinal Newman Society (CNS), a respectable Catholic education non-profit, for opposing Common Core. But the fact is that CSA has received $1.7 million from the Gates Foundation, and its Florida office is hammering CNS for making “strident attacks” on the program. God forbid that Catholic schools exercise their independence by rejecting Common Core.

Donohue also observed that Catholic dioceses are already “having misgivings about [adopting the Common Core].”

“There is no end to the lobbyists, activists, researchers, unions, think tanks, and politicians who have been paid to get on board,” Donohue continued. They have “from the beginning acted more like salesmen than educators.”

Donohue writes about how the application of the Common Core has also been far from successful, arguing, “The implementation of Common Core in New York State, one of the first states to adopt it, is an abject failure: academic achievement is regressing.”

Donohue continued, “Whatever merits it may have, its most vociferous proponents are out of line when they try to strong-arm Catholic schools into accepting it.”

Missouri Education Watchdog, Anne Gassel

Someone please sign everyone at the USDoEd up for a refresher course on the constitution. They are really struggling with the concept of the 10th amendment.

The latest from Arne Duncan et al continues the tradition of the federal government inserting its nose into local school district decisions which the constitution does not allow for and ESEA expressly forbids. They are now going directly to local school districts and asking 16,000 Superintendent across the country to sign THEIR Future Ready technology pledge.

From the letter sent to Superintendents,

The U.S. Department of Education seeks to encourage and support superintendents who commit to taking a leadership role in this transition with recognition and resources to help facilitate this transition to digital learning.

The main goal of this initiative is to get districts, charters and private schools to commit to maximizing their use of digital learning and broadband access to the internet. They want schools to fund the resources necessary to “leverage their maximum impact on student learning…
