Unified Patriots by Vassar Bushmills

I’m not sure who first used this title, and it may even have been me, in 2009, when I wrote a short essay on “Homer Simpson and the Constitution” at RedState.com The line had nothing to do with the content of the essay, and the content of the essay flew way over the head of the editors there, for it argued that all American have the most common of forbearers, and we should pay attention to the lesser in our society for we all arose from that very same stock.

It was one of my “never take yourself too seriously” inquiries which is rejected out-of-hand by two generations now. It’s like me telling Jonah Goldberg that in some small junior college in Georgia there is likely a student there from a farm family near Waycross who is as well read and has a wiser understanding of American history and its underlying philosophy than he does.

Of course there is, and thousands more, only they will never be heard.

It was about humility and gratitude.

I think it was Mark Twain who first used “reformed whores”, probably in a piece having to do with the early history of California after the Gold Rush at Sutter’s Mill. Twain arrived there a decade later, when San Francisco was only a pup, so  he had more firsthand knowledge of its founding Pilgrim families than most.

San Francisco has always liked to view itself as the Boston-of-the-West-Coast, the home of the Founding Pilgrims of California. And in comparison with Los Angeles they may have a point.

But the joke going around when Mark Twain visited was that Nob Hill, the wealthiest and most blue-blood neighborhood of Bay Area aristocracy, far more than the nouveau riche properties of Pacific Heights where Lady Di lives, was originally settled by got-rich miners and the whores they took as brides.

This is where the phrase, “there’s nothing so self-righteous as a reformed whore” comes from, for it’s true, former prostitutes were very anxious to wipe away that social stain.

And let me tell you, no Mayflower grand dame highbrow could ever match these 24-carat dowagers on Nob Hill for that perfect down-the-nose self-righteous sense of privilege.

But I’m not making fun here. On the contrary, for America is unique in world history for its ability to produce this sort of cultural phenomenon. We had no royalty so a kind of royalty sprung up just by being there first.

In Europe a self-educated man from the lower classes might rise to the rank of being able to manage a prince’s finances(Bob Cratchit) but lower class women could not even dream of bathing and squeezing pimples on Elizabeth I’s shoulders, and only the most elegantly educated in the salons of Paris could rise to the rank of courtesan (kept woman, er, whore) such as Milady de Winter.

But here in America a girl of 19 in our first century could barely get a bath once a week, and barely a change of underwear, yet she could strike it rich by meeting a man who struck it rich and then get to bathe in a gold tub by 30.

Or maybe she would only marry a man who world build the only granary within fifty miles. BY Nebraska standards, rich.

I think it was me who added the “Lawyers Wives” to the title, for that was how I saw many of them when I graduated from law school, for they carried the same sort of reflected glory of status in their husbands’ careers.. Very socially-conscious. Since my wife had shared beers with prostitutes in Tokyo, at a CIA front called Manos, she was less insecure of her status. I recall, at a dinner while sitting with another captain and his wife, she blurted out “Wayne could have been a doctor, but he chose law instead.” My wife looked at me, then Wayne, and no doubt tried to imagine me taking the medical school boards, and just fell out in uncontrollable laughter[…]

Very clearly, Christine Blasey Ford lied during her time in the spotlight at Thursday’s Senate confirmation hearing for Brett Kavanaugh.

It’s a sort of law that when an accuser, under oath, says a thing was done to her by a named fellow “100%”, as Blasey Ford did yesterday, and then that named fellow, Brett Kavanaugh, the accused, also under oath also states, “100%” he did not…

…one of them lied.

Certain laws of nature are involved here, for when a person says something that is clearly not so, as one of these people did, there are only four possible reasons why; 1) mistake 2) lie, 3) ignorance (stupidity), and 4) delusion.

We can rule out stupidity. And delusion, which while a very possible option in a world where possibly a third of the entire adult population is living in a kind of mass delusion about all sorts of realities, and that delusion most likely externally induced, I tend to also rule it out, because evidence…the sort juries are actually allowed to hear and consider, leans heavily toward a series of events long after the alleged date of the sexual assault, that lead to knowing cognitive awareness. Malice aforethought

She lied because, as Brit Hume of Fox News so ineloquently put it, Bret Kavanaugh had more evidence supporting his denial than did Christine Blasey-Ford in adding weight to her accusation.

I haven’t watched Fox News in several months. Any of it. I’m now addicted the space monsters on Comet Network and the Military History Channel. One of the reasons I stopped was that, since the election almost every element of the media, all political establishment insiders, had begun to lead (or follow, one is never sure) the national Democratic Party, in some of the most exotic plots against the Trump Administration and its very right to exist. known to man.

This began on Day One in February, 2017, and has not just continued unabated, but grown to perilous dimensions, including the rise of a new term in the people’s lexicon, “the deep state”.

This Kavanaugh episode is but a side show to that larger conflict, what the British in India called the Great Game, and Henry Gondorf, a Chicago grifter in the 30s, called the Big Con.

Long story short, for various reasons I suppose, while Fox News would never go along with this Game as played by the rest of the media and its partners in crime in government, neither would they just out-of-hand condemn it. Fox might speak of lies by their competition, and a few politicians, but they would never call them out, never crossing the boundary between “lies and damned lies” as Mark Twain so eloquently pointed out in the 19th Century, when those words alone could cause the drawing of pistols..

To call a man out as “damned liar” was once a big deal. And only this past week I urged members of the Republican Party leadership to do that very thing. I suggested the Republicans throw down on the Dems, warning them that if they brought a knife, we’d bring a gun, Mutually Assured Destruction (MAD).

My prescription was at least partially followed, at least by Sen Lindsay Graham, who said everything to the entitre Democvrat side I wanted Chuck Grassly to say to Diane Feinstein. Lady Di tried to hide under the podium anyway[…]

Unified Patriots by Bob Montgomery

I received a notice from the local court system recently ordering me to appear at a specified date and time for jury duty. So when the time rolled around I hobbled my aged self to the courthouse, signed in and waited with the other prospective jurors for the bailiff to usher us in. I had no idea whether the trial was civil or criminal or any other details. But upon entering, I observed a defense attorney with a young man in his twenties or thirties at the defense table. After a pep talk by the judge, we were treated to the prosecutor’s remarks about the charge and some things for the jurors to consider as the selection process went along.

It was then that I learned that this was a domestic battery case. The words that came out of the prosecutor’s mouth as she cited the charge against the defendant almost caused me to fall out of my seat. I sat there stunned, thinking surely I must have heard that wrong, or out of context. But a few minutes later she repeated those words and I just started shaking my head rapidly back and forth. The first group of prospective jurors the prosecutor was addressing were off to one side, so she could not see me, nor could the defense attorney. But the judge was looking straight at me.

Ultimately, they obtained a panel of jurors from the first group and I was not called upon. But had I been, I had made up my mind that I was going to speak my mind, and not about the mundane topics of “Can you be fair and impartial” and “Have you ever been in a situation, blah, blah, blah” and all that. I would have been immediately excused. Looking back, I wish I had raised my hand during her initial diatribe and asked if I had heard right and proceeded from there. But I didn’t. I blew it. I had a golden opportunity, but I was a good little citizen and dutifully filed out of the courtroom with the others who were dismissed with the thanks of the court for showing up.

Upon returning home I was still shaking my head in disbelief at what I had heard. So I went to my trusty computer and looked up the domestic battery statute. I used Google because it’s faster than going to the library and checking out the code book and wading through all that. Just typed in the search terms and one of the first entries was that my state’s domestic battery statute had been revised in 2016. So I clicked on it and got an article with the revisions highlighted, followed by the actual text of the statute. The first line of the statute was almost verbatim of what the prosecutor had said in court.
It follows:

“35-42-2-1.3. Domestic battery.
 (a) Except as provided in subsections (b) through (f), a person who knowingly or intentionally:
o (1) touches a family or household member in a rude, insolent, or angry manner; or….”

Did any of that make an impression on you? Here it is again:

“35-42-2-1.3. Domestic battery.
 (a) Except as provided in subsections (b) through (f), a person who knowingly or intentionally:
o (1) touches a family or household member in a rude, insolent, or angry manner; or….”

The title of the statute is “Domestic Battery”. B-A-T-T-E-R-Y.” The offense mentioned above is a Class A Misdemeanor and can result in imprisonment for up to one year. The continuing sections of the statute progress from Level 1 through Level 6 Felonies, as the evidence of injury and the ages of the perpetrator and the ….victim….are brought to bear[…]

Justice, Miscarried

Judge Roger Gregory, 4th Circuit Court of Appeals

Unified Patriots by Bob Montgomery

Well, I don’t know if ‘miscarriage’ is the proper metaphor for this subject, but a lot of people use it when they are miffed at a judicial outcome, so I’ll let it ride. It is about the decision just issued by the 4th Circuit Court of Appeals in re President Trump’s infamous ‘travel ban’issued shortly after he took office, which barred entry, temporarily, to the US from certain foreign origins.
The original order was enjoined by a lower court judge and an appeals panel, then revised and reissued, stopped again by another judge and re-appealed to this 4th Circuit.

The text of the decision is obtained from CNN and it runs to 205 pages. For our purposes here, only the first dozen are used, because the arguments and decisions and summaries are lengthy and wordy and, if you have been paying attention to this topic all winter and spring, pretty much superfluous to the rhetoric already out there.

The first thing that grabbed my attention in this court decree was the list of appellants and the list of appellees. I thought it passing strange that an entire staff, entire departments and their named heads, were being sued, apparently in an attempt to get them to refuse to carry out an executive order of the President. So I guess besides Trump, the losers in this case are John Kelly, Rex Tillerson and Dan Coats, all prohibited by virtue of being sued pertaining to their “official capacities” as appointed officials from carrying out the President’s order. And that leads me to remark that should the next terrorist attack in the US occur by the hand of an entrant or entrants from one of the named countries, not only Trump, but all three of the other gentlemen and all of their staffs and the entire named departments and agencies are thus absolved of dereliction of duty or violation of oath of office or any other blame for the consequences of such an attack. Is this what lawyers mean when they talk about “precedent”? Heh. Oh, I guess they have to make sure they cover all their bases to insure the free flow of Muslims and stuff, but the Director of National Intelligence? What’s he got to do with it? He doesn’t enforce immigration orders. Oh, well. *(see below)

Then I looked at the list of appellees, or plaintiffs, which contained a lot of people named Mohammed and Achmed, but also very interestingly includes “John Does #1 and 3” and “Jane Doe#2”. Seriously? Litigants are allowed to anonymously appeal to the 4th Circuit and we can’t know who they are? Why are they allowed to maintain their anonymity? For reasons of …..national security? Heh. When we get to the point where John and Jane Doe have standing in federal court to sue for the denial of protective measures designed to keep Americans safe in their own country, we’re on the verge of something and it’s not equal protection under the law.

Next came the listing of those who had filed amicus briefs in support of the appellants and the appellees. The listing for the appellees went on and on and on and would have populated a small city. You have to laugh at some of the organizations, like the North Carolina Coalition Against Domestic Violence and the National Center for Lesbian Rights – what??? But besides the named groups, there is the generic “Civil Rights Organizations” and “Members of Congress” and “Former DHS Officials”- no need to name them;  the point, apparently, is any and all are welcome, we’re having this social justice party over here and if you breathe and have a pet cause, we want to hear from you[…]

Flashback. It’s much less secretive than before, although they’ve infiltrated all levels of government and beyond and some people haven’t figured it out yet. By Noreen S. Ahmed-Ullah, Sam Roe and Laurie Cohen Tribune staff reporters September 19, 2004 Over the last 40 years, small groups of devout Muslim men have gathered in homes in U.S. cities to pray, memorize the Koran and discuss events of the day.
