New Fast and Furious Documents Reveal DOJ’s Efforts to Obstruct Congressional Investigation

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, House Oversight and Government Reform Committee Chairman Jason Chaffetz (R-UT) sent a memo to Republican Committee members detailing new documents related to Operation Fast and Furious. These documents reveal efforts by senior officials at the Department of Justice to withhold key materials related to the botched gunwalking operation.

Chairman Jason Chaffetz released the following statement on the documents:

“Transparency should not require years of litigation and a court order. These documents illustrate the lengths to which this administration went in order to limit and block access to subpoenaed information. Calculated efforts were made by senior DOJ officials to obstruct Congress. This attempt to prioritize a political agenda ahead of facts is unsettling and unacceptable.”

Background:

The Fast and Furious operation was responsible for allowing approximately 2,000 firearms to illegally flow into the hands of criminals, including Mexican drug cartel associates. On December 14, 2010, Customs and Border Patrol Agent Brian Terry, a United States Marine, was killed while on patrol just miles from the Mexican border. The firearms found at the scene were semi-automatic rifles that were allowed to walk as part of Operation Fast and Furious.

Congressional Republicans have investigated Fast and Furious since January 2011. Over the course of the investigation, the Justice Department has provided false information, stonewalled document requests, produced scores of blacked-out pages and duplicate documents, and refused to comply with two congressional subpoenas.

In August 2012, the U.S. House of Representatives Office of General Counsel filed suit against the Justice Department.

On January 19, 2016, United States District Judge Amy Berman Jackson issued her opinion and ordered DOJ release documents previously withheld under the President’s executive privilege claim. On April 8, 2016, DOJ complied with the Judge’s order, delivering more than 20,500 pages of documents to the Committee.

Former IRS Director, Lois Lerner, Takes the Fifth AGAIN.

Today’s House Oversight and Government Reform Committee hearing in which former IRS director, Lois Lerner, was scheduled to testify turned into nothing short of a dog and pony show.

Rep. Darrell Issa asked Lerner several questions, which went unanswered by Lerner who plead the fifth nine times.  Clear that the questioning was going nowhere fast, Issa adjourned the meeting at which time, Rep. Elijah Cummings embarked on what appears to be a not so well scripted rant.

Lois Lerner, the IRS figure at the center of the Tea Party targeting scandal, once again pleaded the Fifth on Wednesday before the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee. In more than 20 minutes of testimony the former director of IRS exempt organizations refused to answer Committee Chairman Darrell Issa on nine different occasions. The hearing also ended with a bit of fireworks between Issa and Democratic Congressman Elijah Cummings….

Talk about a dog and pony show. Lerner should be thrown in a prison cell to rot for the duration of her life. Clearly, her presence at today’s hearing was part of the Progressive dog and pony show. Cummings ranted as if he was following a script. Therefore, we can expect the race card to be thrown about and Issa accused of “dissing” a black man because he is black. Yada, yada, yada.

Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-TX), vice chairman of the House Judiciary Committee’s Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism and Homeland Security, confronted Holder about the matter on Thursday, June 21. Rep. Gohmert wants Congress to have access to documents from the trial of the Holy Land Foundation, the largest terrorism financing trial in U.S. history. Five Foundation officials were found guilty of funding Hamas and evidence introduced by the federal government shows it was set up by the Muslim Brotherhood’s secret “Palestine Committee” in the U.S.

Three prominent Muslim-American organizations were labeled by the federal government as “unindicted co-conspirators” in the trial-the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the Islamic Society of North America (ISNA) and the North American Islamic Trust (NAIT)…
