Unified Patriots by Vassarbushmills

Ever hear the rally cry, “Remember the Maine!” How about “yellow journalism”? Well, they were fathered by the same men, Joseph Pulitzer and William Randolph Hearst, of “Citizen Kane” fame. Both were newspaper publishers, and also Democrat congressmen. Hearst even ran for president.

Their newspaper chains had been pushing for war against the Spanish Empire in the western hemisphere since the people of Cuba had risen up against Spain in 1895, citing the Monroe Doctrine as sufficient legal justification to drive the Spanish out. Hence was born “yellow journalism”. (I just thought you should know its pedigree.)

In January 1898, the battleship USS Maine, laying at anchor in Havana Harbor, blew up. A mine they rushed to say. And the jingo-cry “Remember the Maine” headlined Hearst and Pulitzer newspapers coast-to-cost and America was suddenly at war. And we quickly drove the Spanish out of the hemisphere.

And we also relieved the Spanish of their Asian possessions as well, for which the people of the Philippines are largely grateful, in part because the United States kept its word about when, how, and in what condition, we would hand the islands back over to civilian control, in just over 40 years. (A world record by imperialist standards.) Wobbly at times, the Republic of Philippines is still a functioning democracy after 70 years.

Now, the logical leap here, considering the obvious similarities between the run-up to the war in Cuba and the yellow journalism of the modern media in trying to stir public sentiment about a looming war with North Korea, would be to conclude that this is the subject of my discussion here.

It isn’t, in part because the entire North Korea war-drum beat today is a canard, only today the American media knows it while the jingo-media of 1898 didn’t, for it was another 80 years before it was determined that the Maine likely blew from accumulated coal gas in the power plants. If viewed in the cold light of day, war with North Korea isn’t looming at all, and those who aren’t glued to jingo headlines know it.

But after that war, we turned Cuba over to its own devices, while we occupied the Philippines. Now we didn’t exactly do a bang up job in the Philippines, but Cuba fared much worse going it alone, as has virtually every other Latin American democracy, almost all of which were products of either Spanish or Portuguese administrations for over 250 years.

In 2003, I sat down in the Staked Plains of the Texas Panhandle with an old Russia hand who also had had a great deal of experience in the Middle East. (I met him in the Moscow McDonalds in 1991, before the Fall.) In a long, rambling exposition  he laid out his theory as to why American-style democracy could succeed in the Middle East and why no other democracy model could.

Paul Bremer was in charge in Iraq at the time, and the Iraqis were about to have their first election. And Bush and Bremer were doing it wrong, Moses Sands said.

(I abridged that long piece and republished it at RedState in 2010, and then in book form along with some other essays on the Middle East at the start of Arab Spring in 2011, at Amazon.com.)

The premise of his argument, which I’ve held to religiously ever since, is that since America was created from the bottom-up, only an American model of government can cause the people of another country to turn against their old ways, from tribalism to top-down local government models, by building new institutions from the bottom-up. Existing institutions at the tribal and local level, which Bremer tried to build on, generally work against the individual citizen from pursuing his own life and liberty with his House as the foundation.

As an occupying conqueror in Iraq we had a duty to try to change that.

Iraq never had a chance[…]

Unified Patriots by Vassarbushmills

Some years ago an old friend, now passed, told me how his mother had been his religious mentor for most his life. There wasn’t a spiritual lesson that he had studied that had not been annotated by his mom.

He told me this to explain one of his crucibles later in life, for it seems that when his parents were in their late 60s, his father had undergone major surgery, but when he came home to recuperate, Mom refused to allow him to get totally well again. Possibly in some spiritual pact with God she had turned her life over to caring for him, and care for him she would, whether he wanted it or not. God had put him in her care, and she was going to keep him there.

I’ve read of such things. So in hearing this story I could imagine either a comedy or a tragedy unfolding. And tragedy it was. His parents argued about his driving the car to MacDonald’s for coffee with his buddies, or, heaven forbid, play golf. He couldn’t leave the room without telling her where or why. She even stood by the bathroom door when he had to go. He confided to his kids that every day was a combat.

After about two years of this, his dad left and lived alone the last few years of his life.

The purpose of my friend’s story was to tell me of his re-visiting his own relationship with God because of these events. Without elaborating, he said his mother did many things to blight his father’s path; sneaky things, dishonest things, even mean things. And when the children would bring those things up to her, she would alternately cry, or deflect, or invoke God in what my friend, at least, believed to be an unholy defense.

His confession to me was that everything his mother had ever told him about God, every annotation in his Bible, every underlined passage, he said he had to go back and revisit, rethink and relearn all over again, just to make sure it could stand alone. He had to learn God all over again without his mother’s fingerprints.

Something like that needs to happen in America now. More of our personal history has been annotated by the American Media than we know.

Donald Trump and the Media’s Russian Dolls; Defining History

An AP analysis only this weekend (7/15/17) stated that “the day-after-day drip-drip-drip of revelations over the past week about Donald Trump Jr.’s contact with the Russian lawyer in 2016 underscores the White House’s inability to shake off the Russia story and close the book on a narrative that casts a shadow over Trump’s presidency.” (Jonathan Lemire)

Jonathan Lemire’s function at AP, it seems, is to paint a narrative of an isolated Donald Trump, beginning when he first took office. So the drip-drip of the Russia story merely feeds into an already established profile of a man standing alone, which, if things work out, will also be a tragic figure. It’s not yet clear what part of Trump’s portraiture the Associated Press is supposed to paint, perhaps his furtive eyes, or maybe the dark office corner in which he’s crouched, or perhaps the thumb he will be sucking, but what is seeming to become clear is that various members of the Media have accepted this assignment to paint one part of Trump into an official media composite that will someday be made public…should be ever actually fall[…]

Wow! Magazine by Joshua Pundit

Today is the anniversary of a modern miracle, the Israeli victory of the Six Day War, מלחמת ששת הימים, or Milhemet Sheshet Ha Yamim in Hebrew. It saw an outnumbered Israel beat back an attempt at destruction and genocide, reunite Jerusalem, bring the strategic Golan and the historic Jewish homelands of Judea and Samaria back under Israeli sovereignty. It’s worth recounting 50 years later, when Israel’s mortal enemies once again gather to attempt to destroy her.

Egyptian leader Gamal Abdul Nasser had formed a military alliance with Syria, the United Arab Republic (UAR) and with the aid of the Soviet Union, both countries had built up a substantial military force, vastly outnumbering Israel in tanks, planes and manpower.

After the 1956 war,the Israelis had agreed to withdraw from Sinai based on President Eisenhower’s guarantees that provided for a UN peacekeeping force to be stationed there to prevent feydayeen terrorist raids on Israel, the main cause (at least from the Israeli standpoint) of the ’56 war.

Another part of the ceasefire agreement that ended the 1956 war concerned the Straits of Tiran, a waterway connecting the Gulf of Aqaba and the Red Sea and Israel’s sole Red Sea outlet for the port of Eilat[…]

Depending on your settings, Google has your voice recorded, your searches recorded, HAS YOUR LOCATION, your whereabouts over the past year recorded and mapped.

Yes, this is real.

Follow the simple instructions below to see what is recorded on your phone- or children’s phones and learn how to delete the recordings. Then, CHANGE YOUR SETTINGS.

It is worth your time to do this. Get this. I had an old android phone. When I had the old phone, we took a trip. I got a new phone and a new computer after this trip (my old computer went black screen and died.) So, two new devices, after this trip.

Logging onto my new phone today, to see if Google really does record and store your voice and map your travels… Sure enough, Google had my location, every place I have gone was marked on the map. Remember, my new phone, my new computer were not even purchased when I went on this trip last year. Google can collect this audio and location data from your phone and store it in their cloud. You can clear cookies (which I do), you can get a new device and your data history is still stored, talking to you, and showing you what you searched for, your geo location, where you have been in the world[…]

Show this photograph to the college student in your life and ask, “What’s wrong with this picture?” and “What are the names of the Supreme Court Justices?”

College students thinking that Judge Judy Sheindlin aka “Judge Judy” is a Supreme Court justice is about as bad as it gets.

PJ Media by Tyler O’Neil

According to a newly released poll, 10 percent of college graduates—COLLEGE graduates—think Judge Judy is on the Supreme Court. A study done by the American Council of Trustees and Alumni (ACTA) confirmed the trend that “recent college graduates are alarmingly ignorant of America’s history and heritage.”

Many parents accept the difficult truth of modern education—they have to make sure their kids are actually learning something, at least in elementary school, and maybe even high school. Now, they just might want to do their due diligence for college.

In addition to the surprising fact that 10 percent of college grads think Judge Judy is on the Supreme Court, the ACTA study found that 40 percent didn’t know Congress has the power to declare war. Fifty-nice percent believe Thomas Jefferson […]

Remember, these are the same people who will vote for Hillary Clinton because she goes on Seth Meyers Late Night and lies about her emails, Benghazi, Bill’s dalliances and blames her failed policies on Republicans.

They are the same useful idiots who will vote for Communist loon, Bernie Sanders not because of his policies but based on the red diaper baby appearing in a music video dancing to Drake’s Hotline Bling as edited and put together by the staff of Ellen DeGeneres after Sanders danced during an appearance on her show last year.

Yeah, far too many are THAT STUPID.
