If you are hoping to raise some money for next month’s rent, mortgage or car note by playing the Illinois lottery, you might want to reconsider.
In July, Illinois began delaying payments of lottery winnings in excess of $25,000. On Wednesday, they lowered the bar. Lottery winners of more than $600 will now receive IOUs until the state can work out its budget problems.
The IOUs are one of the many side effects of the stalemate over a new budget between Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner and the state’s Democratic lawmakers who control the Illinois General Assembly.
“Payment delays will occur because there currently is no legal authority for the Illinois Comptroller or the Illinois Lottery to issue checks,” the Illinois Lottery said in a statement. “Please note that the funding to pay winners exists, but the legal authority to issue checks does not.”
The lottery said the payments will be made once a state budget is passed….
What kind of swindle are Progressives running here? Do they really believe that people will continue to play the lottery in Illinois after they realize that in lieu of a check or cash, they will receive an IOU?
In the meantime, the Illinois Lottery website continues to reel people in with no mention visible on its website of IOUs. See below.
