There’s an Internet Protest Underway today to fight ending Net Neutrality.. Here at Grumpy Opinions, we didn’t know about until this morning, or we would be participating.. Since we didn’t know about it, we had no way to warn our readers in advance, and thought it would be unfair to spring it on you with no warning.

Before we go any farther, scattered across the internet roughly Ten Million websites use the WordPress Platform. There are two distinctly different types of websites that use the WP Content Management System. WordPress Dot Com is a free hosting service offered by WordPress. Then there is self hosted WordPress, self hosted sites, like Grumpy Opinions use the WordPress system but pay for their own hosting and are not subject to some of the restrictions imposed by WordPress Dot Com.

I subscribe to a website called WP Tavern, it specializes in WordPress News.. This morning I had an early-early morning email from them, I clicked on it and found:

Today, those who support internet freedom are simulating serving pages at a snail’s pace, in protest of internet service providers that are currently spending millions of dollars lobbying for the FCC’s proposed rules which essentially eviscerate net neutrality.

WordPress.com joins 150 other major tech companies, including Netflix, Mozilla, Kickstarter, Reddit, and Etsy, in the September 10th Internet Slowdown protest. The campaign features a loading icon and urges visitors to demand that lawmakers defend net neutrality.

I din’t know a thing about it until this morning..

For self hosted WordPress Sites participation is voluntary, that may not be the case for WordPress Dot Com sites.. Puma has both a Self Hosted Site and a WordPress Dot Com Site, she told me this morning her Dot Com Site had a massage about Net Neutrality and wasn’t loading right. I have’t looked to see how it’s affecting some of the other big players Sarah Gooding mentioned..

If Net Neutrality comes to an end, so will most of the websites you currently enjoy…

Barack Obama’s Plan to Reach Out and Touch Nation at Will

Considering that most Americans despise government intervention, we are certainly not going to approve of Barack Obama’s plan for a new emergency alert system that will give the malignant narcissist the power to address the nation at once, whether we like it or not.

The talking points are that this new system, which requires that every broadcaster in the nation participate, would be used during emergencies such as a terrorist attack or a major natural disaster.

The Obama administration quietly announced on Tuesday that it intends to change the way Americans learn about natural disasters and other major emergencies during radio and TV broadcasts, giving the president the ability to flip a switch and address the entire nation at once….

the Federal Communications Commission has filed public notice of a rule change that would…give the federal government instant access to all the nation’s airwaves at once, in the event of a national emergency….

The FCC also has a separate public alert system for smartphones in the works. It was first tested in 2013 on a statewide basis but hasn’t been fully deployed.

We are already getting a taste of what such a system would do.

For example, how many times have you witnessed when watching Fox News or a program on The Blaze channel the screen suddenly going dark for a few seconds.

The temporary blackout always occurs in the height of a discussion about the government only to resume broadcasting seconds later after the person speaking at the time of the blackout has made his or her point.

These temporary blackouts occur a little too often to be a coincidence especially since it rarely occurs elsewhere.

Television Broadcasting, Radio Stations, Cable System Operators (Rate Regulation Standard), Cable System Operator (Telecom Act Standard), Broadband Radio Service (BRS), Cable and Other Subscription Programming, The Educational Broadband Service (EBS), Satellite Telecommunications and Other Telecommunications, etc. would be within reach of Obama’s tentacles.

Summary:In this document, the Federal Communications Commission (Commission) seeks comment on proposed changes to its rules governing the Emergency Alert System (EAS) to establish a national location code for EAS alerts issued by the President amend the Commission’s rules governing a national EAS test code for future nationwide tests require broadcasters, cable service providers, and other entities required to comply with the Commission’s EAS rules (EAS Participants) to file test result data electronically and require EAS Participants to meet minimal standards to ensure that EAS alerts are accessible to all members of the public, including those with disabilities.

I object to the power of such a system in the hands of Progressives Communists, one in particular, who loves photo ops and to hear himself speak, i.e., Barack megalomaniac Hussein Obama.

It is predictable that the narcissist would abuse this system by interrupting the lives of Americans any moment of the day to shove his ideology down the throats of Americans, use this system to dispatch orders to his civilian brown shirts, attack his enemies, indoctrinate our youth and control the message.

On top of that, the system is hackable.

This estimated cost of this infringement on the liberties of Americans somewhere between $7 and $13.6 million system is a waste of taxpayer dollars.

Finally, reverting back to the issues mentioned in my sidebar (above), we do not need such power in the hands of the least transparent administration in the history of the United States or any Communist for that matter. H/t Give Me Liberty.

TYRANNY ALERT: Via Another Executive Order, Obama Seizes Control of all Communication Sytems Including Internet

Introducing executive order 13618 entitled, “Executive Order — Assignment of National Security and Emergency Preparedness Communications Functions.”

Besides being the most far-reaching of the executive orders signed by the self-anointed monarch to date, Executive Order 13618  is yet another volley lobbed at the liberties of Americans and the U. S. Constitution.

Furthermore, this latest act of tyranny is straight from of the Communist Manifesto:

Sixth Plank: Centralization of the means of communications and transportation in the hands of the State.  (Federal Radio Commission, 1927; Federal Communications Commission, 1934; Air Commerce Act of 1926; Civil Aeronautics Act of 1938; Federal Aviation Agency, 1958; becoming part of the Department of Transportation in 1966; Federal Highway Act of 1916 (federal funds made available to States for highway construction); Interstate Highway System, 1944 (funding began 1956); Interstate Commerce Commission given authority by Congress to regulate trucking and carriers on inland waterways, 1935-40; Department of Transportation, 1966.)

The following excerpts from Executive Order 13618 are particularly disturbing:

Sec. 5.2. The Secretary of Homeland Security shall: (a) oversee the development, testing, implementation, and sustainment of NS/EP communications, including: communications that support Continuity of Government; Federal, State, local, territorial, and tribal emergency preparedness and response communications; non-military executive branch communications systems; critical infrastructure protection networks; and non-military communications networks, particularly with respect to prioritization and restoration;

(b) incorporate, integrate, and ensure interoperability and the necessary combination of hardness, redundancy, mobility, connectivity, interoperability, restorability, and security to obtain, to the maximum extent practicable, the survivability of NS/EP communications defined in section 5.2(a) of this order under all circumstances, including conditions of crisis or emergency…

…Security’s organization and management structure for its NS/EP communications functions, including the Government Emergency Telecommunications Service, Wireless Priority Service, Telecommunications Service Priority program, Next Generation Network Priority program, the Executive Committee JPO, and relevant supporting entities.

Sec. 5.3. The Secretary of Commerce shall: (a) provide advice and guidance to the Executive Committee on the use of technical standards and metrics to support execution of NS/EP communications;

(b) identify for the Executive Committee requirements for additional technical standards and metrics to enhance NS/EP communications;

(c) engage with relevant standards development organizations to develop appropriate technical standards and metrics to enhance NS/EP communications;

(d) develop plans and procedures concerning radio spectrum allocations, assignments, and priorities for use by agencies and executive offices;

(e) develop, maintain, and publish policies, plans, and procedures for the management and use of radio frequency assignments, including the authority to amend, modify, or revoke such assignments, in those parts of the electromagnetic spectrum assigned to the Federal Government; and

(f) administer a system of radio spectrum priorities for those spectrum-dependent telecommunications resources belonging to and operated by the Federal Government and certify or approve such radio spectrum priorities, including the resolution of conflicts in or among such radio spectrum priorities during a crisis or emergency….

Free Cell Phone Service for the Poor to the Tune of $1.6 Billion

After losing his sales job, the 37-year-old single father of two from Perry, Md., couldn’t afford to continue his regular wireless contract. After learning of the federal program that provides wireless service to the oft-unemployed poor, Mensch signed up for a free Kyocera (KYO) cell phone with 250 free minutes of calling a month through Assurance Wireless, a brand run by Sprint Nextel (S). “Because of Assurance, I was able to get a call back from an employer,” says Mensch, who received a job offer in November after nearly two years without a job.

Sprint Nextel isn’t driven by altruism. Serving cash-pinched customers like Mensch can pay off due to federal government subsidies. And finding new customers isn’t hard. With unemployment at 9.4 percent and one in six Americans living in poverty, Sprint and rival América Movíl’s (AMX) TracFone unit have seen an explosion in sign-ups for the government-subsidized free wireless services they’ve offered for more than a year….”

While a free cell phone at the cost of taxpayer may have proven beneficial for the individual in the above article, as usual with entitlement programs, there is no shortage of abuse.

More than 12.5 million so-called low income Americans received free cell phones.  The cost for the free cell phones, a whopping $1.6 billion.

As usual with anything remotely connected to the government, there is the lack of oversight.  There are thousands with these free cell phones who do not qualify for the program and probably just as many who have more than one of these free cell phones.

McCaskill Moves to Stop Government Waste in Free Phone Program

“WASHINGTON, D.C. –  A government run cell phone program, ripe for fraud, has caught the attention of oversight advocate U.S. Senator Claire McCaskill who is seeking answers to questions about rampant abuse and waste in the program-and in a letter to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), McCaskill outlines steps she is taking to stop the fraud in its tracks.

The LifeLine program was created to provide phone service to low-income individuals.  McCaskill’s letter comes after she received a solicitation at her home for a free cell phone from the Lifeline program.  The mailer did not require documentation for proof of eligibility.  McCaskill is, in fact, not eligible for the program.

The Lifeline program is funded by the Universal Service Fund (USF), which receives its resources from a fee telephone users pay on their phone bills.  The FCC oversees the USF and, accordingly, the Lifeline program.

‘…I remain troubled by the expansive potential for the program to be abused, especially since Americans contribute to the program through their monthly phone bills,’ McCaskill wrote in a letter to the FCC.  ‘The current requirements to determine eligibility often do not require customer documentation for participation in Lifeline, which may result in individuals receiving phones who should not be…”

Several months ago, I telephoned a former associate and left a message on his voicemail.  When he returned my call, he said, “Sorry, I was on the other phone.”

When I asked this individual who lives off the government dole how is it that he does not work but he and his wife who does work can afford a landline in their apartment and two cell phones each, he told me about Safelink and the free phones.

I then asked this individual, “Why do you have two cell phones?” His response, as if I was the stupid one, “Cause it’s free.”

In other words, this couple is beating the system, rather ripping off the system.

Remember last summer when Michelle Obama visited a soup kitchen for the homeless and poor down the street from the White House?

Angry yet America?

For those who would say that this is a Federal program and no tax dollars are used, I say come again?

The Universal Service Fee or Universal Connectivity Fee you see on your monthly phone bills is nothing more than a tax.  Said tax goes into the fund, which finances this giveaway to the poor.

As a child, we did not have a telephone in our home.  For that matter, neither did most of the families who lived on my street.

There were two telephones on my block, one in the record shop down the street and the other in the candy store on the corner.

If you needed to make a telephone call, you went to either of these locations before 6 p.m., Monday through Saturdays.  At other times, we did without and we got along just fine.

Today, there are those who actually believe that it is their right to own a cell phone.  Correction:  Owning a cell phone or landline is not a right, not even for the poor.

On that day, federal authorities are going to shut off all television and radio communications simultaneously at 2:00PM EST to complete the first ever test of the national Emergency Alert System (EAS).

This isn’t a wild conspiracy theory. The upcoming test is posted on the Public Safety and Homeland Security Bureau website.

Only the President has the authority to activate EAS at the national level, and he has delegated that authority to the Director of FEMA.  The test will be conducted jointly by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) through  FEMA, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) National Weather Service (NWS).

In essence, the authority to seize control of all television and civilian communication has been asserted by the executive branch and handed to a government agency….”

The United States went through the entire Cold War without the need to implement such an interruption on a national scale.  So why now?

Does Barack Obama feel the need to massage his ego and flex his muscle thereby sending us all a message?

The daily interruptions as endured for decades by the Emergency Broadcast System should more than suffice.

Why is that SUDDENLY not enough?

Something stinks which leads me to wonder what the Feds intend to alter during this interruption.
