“Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, bowing to Republican opposition to a 1,924-page $1.2 trillion spending measure packed with earmarks, withdrew the bill and said he would work with Republican leaders on a smaller, short-term budget fix to avoid a looming government shutdown.”
Hoorah! A 1,924 bill containing 6,714 earmarks is dead in the water.
For starters, a very embittered Harry Reid did not have the votes to pass this nightmare.
Americans from both parties made phone calls in overwhelming numbers to the Capitol expressing their displeasure with the pork-laden legislation.
In addition to losing support from both parties, nationwide tea partiers were lining up for a read in of the Omnibus Bill naming every earmark and their sponsors helped secure its defeat.
Below is an excerpt from an email I received this evening from Tea Party Express:
“As part of our effort to call attention to this shameless act by President Obama and Members of Congress, we at the Tea Party Express are joining with Senator Jim DeMint, Tea Party Nation and FreedomWorks by doing a public reading of the entire bill – since Members of Congress long ago stopped reading the bills they vote on.”
Instead, Reid said that he would meet with Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell who has prepared a one-page stopgap bill that will fund the government for the next two months.
Of course, rather than admit that this bill was a bad idea from its inception, Reid tried to lay the blame for its failure to pass on Republicans.
“Reid, in announcing his decision, lashed out, saying that he had the support of the nine GOP senators needed to pass the measure, but suddenly that support evaporated.
‘his action taken by my friends on other side of aisle going to cause people to lose their job,’ Reid said.”
Suddenly the left is concerned about jobs. Reid’s statement boils down to Progressive fear mongering and deception.
Credit to Mitch McConnell for a job well done.
“McConnell gave a different interpretation.
“He doesn’t have the votes,” McConnell said. “And the reason he doesn’t have the votes is because members on this side of the aisle increasingly felt concerned about the way we do business.”
A McConnell aide said the leader “worked the phones” for days, pressing his members to quash the bill. Republicans had strongly condemned the $1.27 trillion omnibus spending bill, which would fund the government through Sept. 30, for its $8.3 billion worth of earmarks — though some of those earmarks belong to Republicans.”
No doubt, Harry Reid and fellow Progressives are eating crow instead of pork tonight.
In the meantime, kudos patriots for a job well done.
We shall see.
