William F Buckley, Jr. was the founding figure of modern conservatism in America. He wrote God and Man at Yale when he was 25, and wrote many books afterward until he died in 2008.

But he had an extra dimension which seems to have been lost on the newer generations of conservatives, which I’ll discuss here.

In 1960, at age 35, in his home, WFB and several other “founders”, penned the Sharon Statement, which became the founding statement of the Young Americans for Freedom, (the YAF) which went on to become the central conservative campus organization for over 50 years.

I never joined, as I was not a conservative in my college days.

It was not until 1964, and the Goldwater campaign, that I became aware of Mr Buckley, who was then still not yet 40, 4 years younger than my dad, who subscribed to National Review that year and sent back- issues to me every few weeks or so.

By the time Ronald Reagan was elected, and I was 35, I had been a conservative for only four years, but never disagreed with National Review in all those earlier years about conservatism, just still holding onto my own brand of “Civil Rights liberalism”.

Like many liberals of my generation, my error was in believing government could do good things, which, later reading and real-life experience proved to me was wrong-headed and that the Founders knew exactly what they were doing when they designed government small, and left the people in charge.

In 1976 I had my Road to Damascus moment while in the Army, during the Ford-Carter campaign. I read a Mary McGrory column in the Arizona Republic where she stated (and I paraphrase) that “Modern Liberalism stands for the proposition that all human conduct should be subject to the political process.”

At that instant I ceased being a liberal, and never looked back.

The Sharon Statement, which I link here, while aimed at defining the YAF, is essentially the Canons of Conservatism. Virtually every conservative, including #NeverTrumpers, would agree with it, if they’d bother to read it.

So I recommend every millennial and Gen X’er to do just that.

But in 1960 it was written for college students who already possessed a core set of principles that inclined them to see threats to democracy, internal and external, and the freedom found in free markets and the uniqueness of America in the first place[…]

Columbine and Parkland, the Common Thread

University of Texas Tower shooting (1966)

Unified Patriots by Vassar Bushmills

I’m not a student of school shootings, except to take note of the shooters, many of whom, from Virginia Tech to Sandy Hook in Connecticut to even Dylan Roof in South Carolina, were mentally ill but able to get a gun anyway, only not so much because of their easy availability as to fatal flaws in the bureaucratic system that were designed to prevent the mentally unstable to get weapons. Bureaucracies do that, which is why there can never be any kind of gun “control”.

A decade has gone by since Virginia Tech and most of the gaps in mental health awareness from that event remain unfilled because the Left’s anti-gun lobby continue to keep their eyes fixed on solving a problem of their ethereal Utopian world of World Order, totally disarming a constitutionally-protected armed populace.

As long as fractures in mental health protections fail, they can continue to keep their eye on the larger prize.

So it will be with the shooting in Broward County, Florida, at Margery Stoneman Douglas High School near Ft Lauderdale. We know where the media and the Left will take this; 1) denying access to guns, and 2) a failure of due diligence by local officials at the school and local police to identify several hundreds of thousands 18-20 year old kids of looking and dressing scary, talking big on social media, making broad statements about shooting and mayhem, but falling short of “legal threats” (as the FBI found with Cruz), and in some way interdict them.

Leftists believe anyone who disagrees with them, much less picks up a gun, is mentally deficient or mentally disturbed. This in turn justifies some sort of physical constraints and invasion of privacy.

I’m not sure how long it will take for public pressure to cause the Parkland school and police to kneel at the foot of political correctness and admit that they should implement new programs to more quickly identify angry young kids, white males at least, so as to give the rest of the community a heads-up every-time that kid walks down the street.

I’m sure that’s what the political Left would like to see happen, which is how they see mass shootings; an opportunity for some small victory[…]

Be Sure You’re Right Then Go Ahead by Bob Mack

“…you have to have something before you can lose it and California Governor Jerry Brown’s sanity is nonexistent … If any Republican displayed this level of incoherent thought, there would be calls for resignation. The problem with Brown is he has been this crazy since his political career began and I don’t think anyone notices anymore.” (Jerry Brown Loses It: ‘I Hate Everything’)

“By any reasonable, responsible standard, California is off of the rails…Our absurd pot loving dope pushing Governor Jerry Brown, aka the Moonbeam, working hand in hand with a primarily Democratic majority in the State Senate and State Assembly who are principally anti-American Communists, Racists, Socialists, Progressives, and Globalists are creating a frighteningly tyrannical system of governance that is anti-citizen.” — Jim Horn

“If it babbles and its eyeballs are glazed, it probably comes from California.” — Mike Royko

“When the Oakies left Oklahoma and moved to California, it raised the I.Q. of both states.” — Will Rogers

“Nothing is wrong with California that a rise in the ocean level wouldn’t cure.” — Ross Macdonald

Any state once governed by both Ronald Reagan and Conan the Barbarian, is by definition not exactly normal; but, even in a fiefdom world-renowned for its fruits, nuts, and Hollyweirdos, its current bossman stands out like a misshapen pistachio. Still, as long as the once Golden State continues to provide safe haven for the undocumented demented (see Pelosi, Clooney, Cher, and Mad Maxine Waters) Moonbeam Brown might have trouble holding onto his spot in the top five.

Hold It

Moonbeam grew up in San Francisco, where they’re all a toke or two over the line. He’s been occasionally accused by one or another of the local purge commissions of being insufficiently progressive, a charge which, within the wacky environs of the Left Coast, means someone a notch to the right of Mao Zedung:

“by California standards Brown is viewed as the last adult in Sacramento … After Brown leaves the Capitol, many Californians will miss him not so much for what he has done, but because whatever comes next will be far worse.” (Will Court Filing Salvage Jerry Brown’s Legacy?)

One of Jerry’s problems is that he’s never worked for a living[…]

Setting the record straight.

The south used to vote Democrat. Now it votes Republican. Why the switch? Was it, as some people say, because the GOP decided to appeal to racist whites? Carol Swain, Professor of Political Science at Vanderbilt University, explains.

Lifelong Democrats have been breaking with the Democratic Party for more than a decade (example, baby boomers like myself) but during this presidential campaign season alone Democrat and Independent voter of all ages are fleeing the Democratic Marxist plantation en masse.  Bad news for Hillary Clinton who many Progressive voters can’t stand to see the sight of.  Good for Donald Trump who I’m praying will wipe the floor with the Crooked One.

Breitbart News by Matthew Boyle

Christian Rickers, the Virginia-based executive director of the Trumpocrats PAC—a Super PAC designed to help his like-minded lifelong Democrats abandon the sinking Democratic ship due to Hillary Clinton’s nomination and join the Trump movement—walked Breitbart News through why he is leading the effort among Democrats who support Trump for president.

Rickers’ argument centers on trade policy, and Trump’s ardent opposition to the Trans Pacific Partnership (TPP) that Clinton supported publicly more than 40 times but now claims she opposes. He points back to Bill Clinton’s backing of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) from his time as president, and Rickers says Democrats everywhere should be terrified of how much further Hillary Clinton would go if she’s elected president[…]
