New York City Progressives are like a bunch of whiny little children when they fail.
Earlier this month, a judge threw out NYC Public Advocate, Letitia James and City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito’s against co-located charter schools.
The case was filed earlier this year after Bill de Blasio’s defeat in his war against charter schools, more importantly against his nemesis, Success Academy Charter School founder, Eva Moskowitz. (See my earlier post, Pro-Charter School Advocates and Parents Stand against Bill de Blasio’s Charter School Closings #Charterswork).
Long time opponents of NYC’s charter schools and Eva Moskowitz who are in the pockets of the teachers’ union openly declared war on co-located charters after Governor Andrew Cuomo checkmated the mayor’s attempt to sink the charters. (Rules for Radicals #12: Pick the target, freeze it, personalize it, and polarize it.)The efforts to bring co-located charters to their knees failed.
New York Post
A Manhattan judge gave an ‘F’ to Public Advocate Letitia James on Friday, tossing her case to shut down “co-located” charter schools after a city lawyer argued that her suit was a private vendetta.
‘A public advocate’s job is to write reports and seek information,’ city attorney Charles Carey lectured.
As a city councilwoman, James was a vocal critic of putting charters in public school buildings.
Justice Eileen Rakower ruled from the bench that the case does not belong in court, but rather is an issue for opponents of the shared spaces to work out with school officials….
What followed was a bunch of whining Marxists and the demonization of charters.
Daniel Drumm of Educ. Comm. implied that “the charter movement’s goals are to separate kids on the basis of skin color and give advantages to white children.” – Yet these are the faces of NYC charter school students.
Demonizing Charters (City Journal)
At a recent New York City Council hearing, education committee chairman Daniel Dromm denounced the city’s charter schools, calling them a ‘separate and unequal’ system of education that borders on ‘apartheid.’ Public Advocate Letitia James agreed, suggesting that New York City has betrayed the legacy of the civil rights movement by instituting ‘privatization’ and ‘segregation’ in public education. But for all their incendiary charges, the hearing’s participants couldn’t seem to agree who has been victimized by charter schools.
Dromm, James, and others implied that the charter movement’s goals are to separate kids on the basis of skin color and give advantages to white children. But 60 percent of charter school students are African-American. Another third of charter school kids are Latino, which means that New York City’s charters overwhelmingly and disproportionately serve minority communities. In order for the apartheid metaphor to hold up, these schools would have to be pretty miserable places. Yet Dromm and James claim that many charters are lavishly outfitted with the best of everything, their budgets supplemented by ‘Wall Street raiders’ and ‘right-wing extremists….’
New York City Council of Marxists is going so far as to accuse charter schools of “restraining students” and “mind manipulation” comparing them to prisons. Saul Alinsky’s rule #5, out the window because no one is buying it.
Teaching children the three R’s, that they are exceptional and capable of accomplishing anything they set their sights on if only they work hard to attain their goals is not mind manipulation. It is, however, what is lacking in the public school system because of teachers’ unions and Progressives in their back pockets.
By demonizing charter schools, NYC Progressives, correction Communists are demonizing those whom they claim to represent.
