We live in perilous times when it comes to free speech, and the threats are coming from both the left and right. The president has threatened legal action against the media, and progressive activists have used violence to shut down campus speakers they don’t like.

In The Los Angeles Times, former federal prosecutor Ken White has some sharp insights on how to fight back against the would-be censors by shredding the most-popular clichés used by people trying to make the rest of us shut the hell up.

If today’s calls for suppressing speech teaches us anything, it’s that we can never take the First Amendment for granted. Even if the Supreme Court is on our side, free expression will only continue to exists if we’re brave enough to make it ourselves.

PLANT CITY, Fla. – The Hillsborough Community College advisory council is done with the Pledge of Allegiance.

The pledge takes too long during its meetings, some members of the Institutional Advisory Council argued, while others believe it’s “inappropriate” in a college setting, WFLA reports.

“A heated discussion ensued between the IAC about the Pledge of Allegiance and its appropriateness in an institution of higher learning which fosters academic freedom and structured dissent against authority,” according to meeting minutes cited by the Tampa Bay Times.

“Some members expressed views that the Pledge made some people uncomfortable and that it violated their beliefs in academic freedom and the goals of the IAC….”

Okay, so let me get this straight. Hillsborough Community College Marxist council, Institutional Advisory Committee, has elected to infringe upon the free speech of those who have no problem reciting the Pledge of Allegiance because they (Marxists) have ordained that reciting the Pledge takes too long and makes them feel uncomfortable.

SCANDALOUS.

UPDATE:

Pursuant to Hillsborough Community College Facebook post (below), the Institutional Advisory Committee has since reversed its decision…for now….until they come up with an excuse that they think will stick????

If you haven’t been embroiled in the “Gamer Gate” debacle where feminist social justice warriors go on the attack against video game “misogyny,” consider yourself lucky. One of the chick generals in the war is Anita Sarkeesian, who produced a bunch of videos detailing what she considers sexism in video games. When it comes to facing criticism herself, however, she’s less than open to dissenting voices:

How typical of Progressives to “play the gender card” in their never-ending declarations of what is sexist shooting poison arrows from every direction at those targeted, in this instance, the gaming industry.

Even more typical is the audacity of mad feminists (among others on the left) to seek cover, in this instance from Google, when those targeted fire back and hit their mark.

While I have never watched Duck Dynasty, I know for a fact that many of my family members and neighbors do.  My urban New Yorker son who does not travel south of the Mason-Dixon line often sits down with his wife, two children and together they watch Duck Dynasty together. 

After dinner, families across America come together to watch this program.  In addition, quality television programs that brings families together if only for an hour is lacking. 

Message to A&E: Tread carefully.
