Media Research is calling out the Marxist cowards at the New York Times who earlier this year refused to post a Charlie Hebdo Muhammad cartoon once again posting a painting of “The Holy Virgin Mary” that went on display at the Brooklyn museum back in 1990 causing such a controversy.
The New York Times’ hypocrisy regarding displays of “offensive” religious imagery runs unabated, as shown in a Scott Reyburn article in Friday’s Arts section on the sale of Chris Ofili’s controversial painting “The Holy Virgin Mary,” which shows the Virgin Mary clotted with elephant dung against a porn-collage background — and accompanied by a photograph of the offensive work.
Yet when the paper refused to reprint a cartoon of Muhammad that appeared in the Paris satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo that resulted in the January 2015 massacre of 12 magazine staffers, it offered this smug, cowardly justification…
It should be noted that in a 1999 op-ed, the New York Times accused then mayor of New York City, Rudolp Giuliani of violating the first amendment rights of the Brooklyn Museum when the former mayor successfully lobbied the U. S. Senate to defund the Brooklyn Museum and threatened to shut the museum down. Giuliani found the piece repugnant and anti-Catholic.

By arguing that a mayor’s power extends to pulling a museum’s plug outright or, if that fails in the courts, to intimidating the city’s more spineless cultural bureaucrats into silence or self-censorship by merely threatening to do so, Mr. Giuliani takes us back to an era many New Yorkers aren’t old enough to remember….
Shortly thereafter, Giuliani was ordered by a New York District Court judge to restore funds to the museum and cease his campaign to evict. The court also ruled that Giuliani violated the first amendment rights of the Brooklyn Museum.
Judge Nina Gershon of United States District Court in Brooklyn ordered the mayor to restore the city’s monthly payments to the museum and end his campaign to evict it and remove its board of trustees over an exhibition that includes a painting of the Virgin Mary on a canvas adorned with elephant dung.
‘There is no federal constitutional issue more grave,’ the judge wrote in her 38-page decision, ‘than the effort by government officials to censor works of expression and to threaten the vitality of a major cultural institution as punishment for failing to abide by governmental demands for orthodoxy….’
Enter 2015 and the New York Times is doing exactly that which it accused Giuliani of doing 16 years ago. H/t Weasel Zippers.
